I own a 1980 VB Commy, and live in NZ. With a vehicle inspection report it only has the chassis number and doesn't specify VIN number or whether it was a manual or not. I am also trying to find out whether the sunroof came out as standard and would like to know the actual model classification i.e. sl or sl/e. As far as i can tell from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holden_VB_Commodore there was no option for sunroofs. How can i investigate this further???

I got a shock when I went into the VP page and see the main pic is of My old VP
WHAT THE HELL! Thats my old VB in the picture!
I don't think there was an option for a sunroof. The Chassis/Body Number in earlier cars is the equivalent of the VIN Number in later cars. The Option Identification plate at the back of the engine bay should have the engine, diff and gearbox codes on it. M20/M21/M76 for manual, M38/M40/M41 for automatic. As for model identification, There should be a number on one of the plates. 8K19 for Commodore sedan, 8L19 for SL sedan and 8X19 for SL/E sedan, I think thats right.

Not quite, the had 8VK69 for base model sedan, 8VL69 for SL sedan and 8VX69 for SL/E sedan.
As for sunroofs, non were ever factory fitted, but some was dealer fitted. If the sunroof is a roll back type, could be the dealer fitted, but if its a glass sunroof that pops up at the rear, someone put that in.

A lucky owner of 2 SL/E Commodores, a rare VB SL/E and a 2 tone VC SL/E. Just need a VH SL/E and have the set!
VB-VLs don't have VIN numbers, they have body numbers which are different.
Oh and having it stamped under the LH headlight is not the original location, all VB/VC have them on the radiator support panel, some VH have them in this spot, some VH-VL have them on the LH strut tower.

Yep thats the VC body number. In my VB-VK parts book that plate is called Vehicle Identification Plate. Like i said before these are body numbers not VIN numbers. When you look at VNs, there VIN is a long number/letter arrangement, i think its in the windscreen.

The top pic is a build plate, you can see the body number stamped on that too.
The other plate in the pic is the Compliance plate, has the ADRs that the VC got.
The build plate pic has the following codes
Model Code VC8VL69= VC SL commodore
Body No. 498841-A, the body number following which plant it was built at, Adelaide.
Trim 1972-63V= I think it means SL cloth, Buckskin colour.
Paint 568-31730= the colour, i don't know what it is, looks like a grey tone and its a solid colour, not metallic
ENG.L14 =blue 202, Trans.M40= 3 speed trimatic auto tranny RR AXLE GU4=3.08:1 diff ratio.
The chassis number should be stamped next to either the build plate(like my VC) or next to the compliance plate(like my VB)
