got a inspection and quote, now the inspection went alrite, just alto of leaking bits and pieces.
But what got me was the ringgear + starter motor, apparently i need new ones of both.
just got a new starter motor about a week and a half ago, was wondering if it could have buggered itself within this time? ( since i got it back it wasnt/hasnt lined up well with the ringgear )
and what would be a average cost for a ringgear + starter replaced?
the guy quoted me 650 for both, went back today and the guy quoted me 800.. said that i must have mistaken the other guy.
both startled me becauce thats over half the price i bought the car for! and 800 was nearly it.
cheers.
personaly i would take it back to whoever replaced the starter and ask them to explain why it isn't lining up, a ringear will be rather costly to replace as the old one needs to cut of and the new one welded on
Mate if ya starter and ring gear is stuffed just go to a wrecker and get some off another car. Don't waste $800 on the new gear. It's not the smallest job to do, but u can get out of it waaaaaay cheaper then $800 for sure!
If ya do it urself u will save shitloads and you'll learn a biit as well.

Wouldn't it be way easier just getting a 2nd hand flywheel with the ring gear on it? Would cost stuff all.

would be alot easier to get a complete flywheel
If your car is an auto, it's a pressure plate with ring gear pressed onto it. It's heated up very hot and as it is cooled, the ring gear compresses on the plate. A flywheel is what manuals have and I am sure the ring gear on them is a complete unit.
The bummer about replacing the pressure plate is you need to take your trans out which can take a while depending on the equipment you have.
$800 seems a lot but they are charging a lot because they need to take the box off.
You really shouldn't need to pay more than $300 for someone to do that. Look around.
problame is that im low on skillwould do it myself if i could, but im only able to do small things and lern as i go, this is way too big a job 4 me but 800seems tons to waste..
the guy that put the starter in said they would join back together smoothly eventualy, well that didnt happen... lol
anyone know of a place that would do it cheeper then 800? cheers
Hey man I know of someone that could supply and fit a second hand flywheel/pressure plate and starter, and prolly wouldn't slug no where near as much. He's sort of a back yarder but he's got his own business as a car wrecker/restorer. Only thing is he's in Port Pirie, bout 220k's North of Adelaide. But if ya can't find anyone it still might be worth coming up here, getting it done in a day then driving home. He's normally pretty cheap with his labour.....and if ya don't like wat he charges for the flywheel I'll give ya one cheap as!

thanks for the offer but its a bit far out for me, asked around some more most places are saying 700-800, the enigne has other problames so ive decided to **** it, save some cash and but a recon engine.
thnaks for the help.
Well mate if u want another engine PM '3800VH' coz a few weeks ago he had a rebullt black 202 that he was sellng cheap. Not sure if he still has it but no harm in asking, he's also in Adelaide
Then if ya get a second hand flywheel/pressure plate with the ring gear just bolt that up to the new motor, and then do it when ya switch the motors over. Only take a day to switch motors over.

Pity about that. If you lived near me, I would have done the job for 2 cartons of beer!It would take I suppose a couple of hours to get the box and tail shaft off and unbolt the pressure plate and replace.
Mechanics simply don't want to take a box out unless they are going to get good money for doing it. I spoke to a mechanic at a garage that told me and my mate he wouldn't take a trans out for less than 300 bucks. That is not including any parts. 2 days later we went to the wreckers, got a new box and put it in and saved our money.
If you need a motor, ebay has lots of 202 motors going damn cheap. You should be able to pick up a good runner for under $250 complete but you need to know what you are buying and ask the right questions and I suppose have some trust in the seller. Then you could just tell the mechanic to put it in but it will still cost quite a lot. A reco motor can be 2 grand plus labor. That's why a lot of people do it themselves because it's the labor that you get rooted for.You sometimes might as well go and buy another car if the cost becomes unreasonable. VB-VK cars in good condition are priced ok these days but there is always a few things that always need fixing. Get one with a roadworthy cert and it would be ok.

2 cartons? ur dam cheep.
i called around and midus quotes went down from 800 to 625 being the cheepest.
then i called city dismant's and they said around 330 for labour and 66 for the parts? is that for real? just seems a little cheep, im under the impression that he got the wrong idea?
they also said that a reocn engine would cost 1700 and 500 for labour, thats not too bad but hell i cant be bothered waiting to save the cash.
Yeah hehe 2 cartons of 30 VB cans
Drive in, on the ramps, a few bolts taken off, tail shaft, speedo cable, shifter linkages, drop, plate off, plate on and the rest goes back on! hehe. Nah it isn't a bad job as long as you have the tools. If you have the right tools anything is possible. It's not a hard job, just a time consuming job.
Drive to that place that quoted you $300 and get them to write a quote. Just ask them how much to take your box out and replace the pressure plate and put the lot back. Maybe even ask at one of the independant places where there might be only 2 employees. They are sometimes good![]()
will do, thanks mate, yeah i was trying independant buisnes's, usualy do good quality because they need the local buisness, my mechanic wont do it though, booked out.
cheers for the help man.
I know someone who has a rebuilt black motor for sale. Its perfect just been rebuilt and it has a crow cam in it. He doesnt want much for it and he might be able to put it in as he is a mechanic. If you want me to ask him I could for ya. Hes down south way. Cheers
