Default VK Calais 202, efi, V8 front dash speakers

    Guys,

I am wanting to replace my calais dash speakers with 4 inch super tweeter ones from jaycar.

Questions... How do I take my two speaker grille plastic covers off? What size are the stock front speakers? Any other info I should know before I attempt looking at the job?

    Cheers.

    Yup its a mongrel job

There are 2 tags that come down from the speaker with barbs on them which push against 2 metal tags on the back of the crash pad.
Really Its a pull the dash completely appart job, if you remove the instrument cluster, and DS dash vent undo the securing screw above the dash vent your might be able to push the tags in and light the speaker up.

I managed to get a pair of NOS speakers from holden for my VK, the speakers are quite shallow theres not alot of room there, they actually secure tot he speaker grills with 4 screws.

    cheers

Cheers. Sounds like it would be impossible to get the super tweeter speakers in there. Any suggestions to where I could put a pair of speakers in my front apart from in the kick panels?

At the moment im just running a new pair of original speakers I came accross. My long term plan is 6" splits with the 6" in the kick panel & the split in the dash. This may not give the best sound clarity.

This time round on my car I didnt want to cut holes in my door trims/remove map pockets. Technically the best spot to mount your speakers is probably to mount speakers in your doors though.

I prettly much followed the advice I received in the audio area of the forum and purchased the best speaker & amp combo money would permit. I ended up buying JL Audio 6x9s & JL Audio amp. I did wire in the standard Calais dash speakers direct to the head unit and have them tuned down. All in all I am very happy with the sound.

    cheers

try using VR/VS pods, I know its done a lot now, althought u will lose the calais map pocket, u will gain the pocket futher back on the pods.

also how do u mount in passengerside kick panel?? computer would be in the way no?

I had the VR/VS door pods on my berlina trims, I didnt like them. There isnt too much rounded stuff on the Vks and the VR/VS door pods didnt really suit the car IMHO.
As for the kick panels it isnt hard to relocate the computer else where on a 6cyl, the Carb 5L dont have one. Im relocating my EFI computer on my commodore, I havent decided between moving it higher or moving it somewhere between the air con fan and tras tunnel.

    cheers

dont molest the calais door trims for a stereo, its not worth the aggro, i did my dash ones without pulling the entire dash apart, you can very CAREFULLY prise the plastics speakers grilles out with a stiff paint scraper covered with a rag so you dont scratch anything, there are two agressive metal clips that you'll need to dislodge before the assembly can be pulled out, The calais speakers are 3.5" and when you start shopping around at car audio places you will find they are an oddball size that you'll have to find your own way of attaching and no amount of bodgying will beat the way the factory ones attach. If I had my time again, and if i find another pair of cerelean calais speaker grilles and leave stock speakers in and just run the majority of the power through an amp to the rear speakers.
