can anyone tell me how to change the starter motor in the vk..
it is a 308 with stock exhaust manifolds... the manual says to undo the flange at between the exhaust pipe and the exhaust manifold, then to raise the engine 50 mm??? will this do it???? also does anybody know if a later model gear reduction starter will fit with stock manifolds??
cheers
bump is the book right?
i was hoping to get this sorted today??
can anyone confirm

People have lives. No need for that sort of crap.
If you have standard manifolds then it's possible you need to remove the left hand side one to get the starter motor out. With my car having headers, I am able to fiddle and remove the starter without taking the header off.
Disconnect the positive terminal on the battery. Remove the manifold to pipe bolts that hold the flange on the left hand side of the motor. Take the large battery cable off the starter motor using a suitable spanner. Pull the starter motor solenoid wire off the starter motor solenoid cap.
Undo the two bolts that hold the starter motor on the block. Withdraw.
Installation is reverse except note:
The condition of the gasket may be perished. It's possible the flange may not have a gasket but a metal ring on the flange. Discard and replace with a new gasket if nessesary. Clean the flange gasket surface to remove any gunk before replacing the gasket.
cause i want a starter thats new and more powerful..
i have also heard that the solenoid doesnt clear...
basically everyone says anything will fit a vk 308 but so far only the stock items fit and i cant find one in good condition
Craig, you're a bit more diplomatic than I would have been...
anyway, if you wanna get your current starter rebuilt and are in melbourne's east, then PACE Auto Electrics in Blackburn South have always been good to me with work they've doen for me and advice when I choose to do my own Auto Elec work... good luck.
ps I dont envy you changing a starter, I have big competition extractors in my VK and everything is very tight, I'd have to drop the extractors before I could even look at the starter...
lol yer its pretty tight but i just lifted one side of the motor and hey presto she came right out....
its no fun when you have you pull them in and out either...
im soo agitated i could buy a ford laser tommorow and be happy that it runs well
Recon starters or change overs vary in price at auto elecs. They can be somewhere between $120-$170 as I have seen in the past. I was even quoted a new one at Repco for $160 but it maybe wasn't a genuine Bosch one. On the other hand, my brother had his starter motor replaced with a new one as the old one was so tragically cactus inside! Ebay sometimes have new starters and gear reduction starters. Worth a look for stuff like that in the future.
Also I remember an auto elec telling me once that the red motor starters are different to the blue and black 308 starters. I am not sure if this is true or not, I'd like to know.
well im not sure but i have found out that hq-wb v8 starters wont fit a commo but commo starters will fit hq-wb.. i have since discovered all v8 starters vb-vr are the same...then the vs bosch ones which will only fit a vk with certain brands of extrctors... pacemaker are one that i know of
