Default Putting the VH on it's side to brace underneath

Well me and Brad decided to make my VH into a roadster for our next burnout car (for legal comps). We chopped the roof and have welded plate over the top of the holes left by the pillars when we chopped them. Now to brace underneath we need lots of room. A mate suggested we get a few tyres (we got ****loads) and place on the ground in a row so we can winch the car up on it's sde resting on the tyres, then we can put the extra bars underneath.

'Dose Pipe' sent me a pic of the undercarriage on a VL, which I'd say would be fairly similar to the VH, and by looking at the pic ya can clearly see how weak it is as there is really no strong bars which go from the front to the back.

So by putting the car on it's side, would that do much damage? If it leaves a dent or 2 well that don't matter, I just don't wanna risk twisting the chassis, then bracing it while it's twisted...as really we should have done all the bracing b4 we chopped the roof.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention, the VH has no motor or trans in it, no interiour except the dashboard...also had no windows. The only thing it really has left is the diff under the back, and will also have the front suspension put back in as well, coz at the moment we have a diff sitting under the front so we can move it. So there isn't much weight left in it except for wat the chassis weighs.

If there is no engine or gearbox then it would be fine to tip over. Just remember to brace it so it doesn't fall on anyone. The ideal way is to get a car cradle that bolts to the bumper mounts then you can flip it over, its like an engine stand on each end of the car.

Get 2 engine stands and bolt one to the front and one to the rear. They make great rotisseries.

Thx for help guys. I got an engine stand but it's currently at an engine builders garage with my motor on it

I could prolly get hold of a couple, but might just tip it over and see how it goes...just wanted to make sure it wasn't gonna fold up when it's on it's side or sumfin haha.

and phat_com, we always got the video camera sittin around ready to film, so we'll film it and chuck it on youtube so ya's can see!

I had no use for the VH coz I bought a VK to put all my good bits in. I was gonna dump it but thought I might try sumfin different coz I don't really wanna get rid of it.

Car stands won't go high enough coz we're big lads and we want enuf room underneath to be able to move around...and a hoist, well we don't have one...work has one and so does my uncle, but I don't wanna move the VH much until it's braced. I'll post some pics up a bit l8r of it, but we only got pics of it just after the roof was chopped....we've neatened a lot of it up now but haven't got new pics.

Good idea mate, might have to do that! Altho I don't think many places would sell or even give away second hand matresses due to hygiene issues. Will give it a go tho...

Also, I'll chuck some pics up in a minute....just sussing out new posts, then I'll do it.

    Ok, here's some pics...

Have done a bit more work to it now. Cut all the pillars down, removed all the windows and mechanism's from the doors, and also welded plate over the pillars. We only got a stick welder so the welds are pretty cruddy, but just good enuf to do the job

Here's some pics I took showing the process of covering over a hole. I'd already welded the plate over tho, so u can't see the hole, but it's nuthin special.

A few welds, haven't finished welding yet tho. I did this side, my welds look pro compared to Brads on the other side haha :P

Ok, welding is done and so is the grinding.

Bit of bog. I put a bit to much hardner in the mix so it set a bit to qwik and I couldn't neaten it up anymore.

The bog sanded into shape. Needed another layer coz I stuffed up and got some low spots, but I wanted to see wat it would look like b4 we ran out of sun, so I didn't bother (I will fix it tho :P).

    And some paint.

And the next pic, well you'll prolly be wonderin WTF it is! haha. Well Brad thought it might be kool to have flames comin out the exhaust....so he's been experimenting with a few ideas. This gadget is sumfin he's building which sits over the end of the exhaust while we figure out how to make a flame. So far it sort of works, and sorta doesn't. If we spray some flammable crap up the pipe we can get a pretty decent flame, but we can't yet get unburnt fuel to ignite.......but Brad prolly won't stop building until he gets it to work, so more then likely the roadster will have flame throwers!

Love the idea guys! Classic photos too, shot-gun hill-billies!

No offense intended, but if it didn't buckle in the middle when you were both sitting in it, i doubt its going to buckle when you turn it over.

Haha I can't believe it either mate I can't remember wat we were doin, but last week sometime I just said to Brad we should chop the roof off the VH. I sad we should do it now coz I'll prolly change my mind in the mornin.....so we got the grinder out and started choppin haha

The thing around Brad's head is a proper head thing, not sure wat they're called. He got it years ago when we were at Primary school, was a fundraiser for cancer (CANTEEN), so we got a few. Digged it out of his cupboard for the pic...thought we might dress up like gangsta's haha.

Haha!! Don't worry mate we thought of that too...so we chucked some rims, tyres and bricks'n stuff under just in case it did collapse.

Your best bet for putting the car on its side is to weld up an A frame brace and bolt it on the chassis rails at the front of the car, as for the rear when I did my VK I have the rear end plated for tow hooks so I connected up to there, but if the car has a tow bar you could use that. Else Just work out some other mounting point for the rear.

Basically the car body shell can be rotated 360 degrees giving you access to all parts of the car.

By the sounds of things your starting to get into the burnout comps a bit so it could be useful in the future building up cars in the future.

    cheers

That sounds like a good idea.....not as easy as rolling it over, but atleast I'll have better access to bits and pieces. It's got a tow bar so that makes the rear easy, and for the front I'll just fab up a bracket to bolt up to the chassis rails...then make or find some A frames.

Don't worry mate, we still got the 'SKiDWAGON' down the back which we have no use for. As it's a wagon it will make it easier to make into a ute....I've thought about this already...it's next on the list ...as long as this one turns out ok strength wise, if it just buckles and breaks then we might have to re-think our design strategies b4 chopping the wagon up haha

with the wagon couldn't you just chop it off at the rear , but leave the roof just past the rear seats and it'll keep most of its strengh

With the wagon, we'd prolly chop the roof just passed the front seats, then build the rear of the cabin. For the window in the back of the cabin we'd prolly use perspex, and of course we'd chuck a bench seat in there instead of the buckets . We'd prolly chuck the same chassis underneath the wagon that's in the sedan, but obviously another one which is made for a wagon. But I don't think the wagon would be much different underneath until passed the diff.

But for now we just gotta try and find some good steal to chuck under the roadster

Haha...I got access to train line stuff.....the car club I'm in has ****loads of it which is in the ground as fence posts, but we've been removing it so we can put up a new fence. But the train line will just be too bloody heavy I would imagine haha. My Pops suggested that as well lol
