Default upgrading alternator in vk 202

    Hi everyone,
i just recently got some new subs in my vk and they chew through a lot more power than the old one, and my alternator cant cope. When the stereo is up loud it'll sit on around 9-10v. I'm wondering if a later model commodore alternator will fit on? Also, i heard the vk calais have a better alternator than the lower models- can anyone confirm this? If so ill just swap em over

    Cheers

na my alternators stuffed, and i'll be changing it regardless. Just wondering if i can change it with something better.

Another question, is there any way i can get my headlights to go brighter (upgrading wiring or something)... my car is suffering from the old vk dim lights syndrome. Im assuming upgrading the earths will help improve this?

Yeah, A VR V6 85amp Bosch alternator will bolt up just fine you will need to remove the pully from your old alternator and fit it to the new one. You will need a rattle gun to do this.
If you choose to use a VN-VS EFI V8 alternator it will have the correct pully but you will need to reverse the bracket housing to do this you will need an impact screw driver.
To wire it up its slightly different to a VK, you will need a fuel injector plug available from wreakers second hand or new from repco in packets of 2. The plug will fit the plug on the alternator. You will need to wire it up tot he battery and trigger as usual but it will also need a warning lamp wire for your dash else it wont charge.

    cheers

goin by what the other guys say id say doubtful for a straight swap.

does anyone know the amp rating for the vk alternator (carby and efi) and whether they are different?

Vk alternator efi is 55amp i think. for upgrading your alternator u can get an 85amp from a vn or even a 100amp from a vt and modify, the oldholden pedia has a great guide.

A V6 alternator will nearly bolt straight up you will need to change the pully, refer to my post above.

Mate I have the same problem. I'm thinking it has something to do with the old wiring aswell. Anyone here fixed this problem?

When I fixed the problems on my VK ages ago, I installed a 85amp alternator off a V6 using the VK pully, put a new charge wire to the battery, and new earth straps from the block to the body & to the battery. After that all my electrical problems were solved.
If you use a later model alternator you can either use a V6 85 amp or a 120amp from a series 1 VT 5L NOT the 5.7L series 2. see my first post for info.

    cheers
