Ive been working on restoring my 1979 VB SL/E, the only thing left is the engine. I have a 253 Red motor already in it, a 253 Blue motor in the shed. I've been told to get VN efi heads and put them on the red motor, but I'm not sure. Some people have told me to just work the red motor, and others have said the blue motor will go better, but the heads are easier to warp. What should I do? I want a fast, reliable engine.

transplant an EFI 5 litre out of a VN - VT I
get a 308 "Black" motor and do the VN head/manifold swap on that, wouldnt bother with the 253 if you want power![]()
whats with all the 253 bashing? mine chirps in 2nd in a traumatic!
anyway the blue would be best i think as they have slight improvments over the red ones so it'd be slightly quicker.
We got rep back, yaaay!
If this was me, i wouldn't touch the original 253, well a standard rebuild only.
Putting VN heads on a 253 is no good, a bit like a 9 inch in a standard Gemini really.
If you want a harder tough 253, have a look on the CAMS site for the Commodore Cup racers and try following that.

A lucky owner of 2 SL/E Commodores, a rare VB SL/E and a 2 tone VC SL/E. Just need a VH SL/E and have the set!
