My VK 308 seems to have developed a running issue. It starts and idles alright, maybe a little high on revs once the choke is off,but otherwise fairly smooth for a lumped old block running most of the time on gas.
Problem is when I shift into drive or reverse the engine starts to lower in revs and wants to stall. To compensate I'm having to leave the choke on and change to neutral at every corner. This issue seems accentuated by either low beam, blinkers and braking.
After stalling twice and nearly stalling around a dozen other times last trip to the (self)service station,I'm not to keen to start it up again!
It is running a holley with the gas on top,a redline maxitork manifold and a mallorey unilite ignition system, which currently works great - while idling in the driveway.
I'm thinking it could be transmission related. Does anyone have any thoughts???
It's your Holley. They are a bugger. I used to always joke saying you have to check your water and oil and tune the Holley every time you go somewhere. Does it just do it on petrol, gas or both. If it's both then its more likely to be a vacuum leak.
my bog stock vc 202 used to do it so im leaning towards vaccum leak
We got rep back, yaaay!
It seems to be worse on gas, though last time I tried petrol it wouldnt start and backfired on me(I thought it may have been dual fuelling so I haven't tried again since)I took it to the local gas mechanic and he said perhaps a leak in the vacuum as well, suggested pouring water slowly around the manifold to check for leaks(though I'm not that keen to wet all the chrome and polish myself)He also noticed that the gas unit was placed facing forwards on on a slanted backwards angle, and that this can cause the diaphram to overwork when braking hard, flood the system and stall. He said it should have been installed parrallel to the chasis rail and mounted vertically and not inclined.Maybe an added factor to the problem?
Just a thought, you say that you had it backfire on you. Is the Holley the one with the valve in the side that ruptures when it gets a backfire through the carby. (thinking of the 350Holley) That won't help if it has happened.
No it's not NOS it's LPG
Good Rep points are always welcome
you mentioned it's worse when you have low beams on, indicators/brakes etc which possibly indicates you may also have an electrical problem( poor spark). the aftermarket iginition unit, did you wire it yourself, are the main +12volt power cable and earth connected directly to the battery? the holley power valve can be ruptured by a good backfire possible causing a rich condition also as mentioned above. have you pulled the plugs to see what they look like?
