have you adjusted the safety neautral switch? you sure you got all the wiring back in the right spot?

inhibiter switch could be stuffed?
EDIT: immortailty beat me to it!
We got rep back, yaaay!
the executive - i only pulled the manifold off and carbi just bolt on stuff to replace gaskets
immortality & jd - i never touched the inhibitor safety switch never touched the gear selector or gearbox at all
i had red ignition lights this morning but not now all other lights work so its not a power issue i havent got a clue what is going wrong
Lowvh6 does it not make any noise when u turn the the key? no clicking? (i know you said that but just clarifying) If not check the starter motor wirnig may have knocked something when changing the manifold gasket
something in the back of my mind is saying the main earth from the engine to battery is missing, doesn't it normally connect on the head somewhere near the intake manifold? also make sure the little wire going to the starter motor solenoid is where it should be? if your keen get a bit of wire a couple of meters long with a spade connector on one end and connect to the starter motor solenoid where the original wire goes. put the other side of the wire to the positive terminal ofthe battery for a second. if the starter works then you have a wiring issue. if not you may have a dud starter.....

I agree with immortality is was also thinking the earth wire as a problem. Also if youre going to do the starter motor trick make sure you have the ignition on as well.

It sounds like a wire to me mate, can u get yourself a digital mulitmeter? do some wire testing, see if theres any power running through the wires
just check ur starter motor wires, check your alternatror wires for flow and see if the nuts are tight. check your battery cables and your earth cable for the same above.
After that if thats all good i'd suggest check your dash again, you might of pulled a wire somewhere or somethings isnt connected right...
- i had this issue before when i put the extractors on, but it was so long ago but i fixed it somehow, im sure it came down to a wire.
Goon i do not see why it would have anything to do with the dash wiring if he did not touch it, also your alternator would not stop the car from starting. Suggesting things that have nothing to do with the immediate problem will just cause more headaches. He has also stated that he has power to lights and accessories and has tried a different battery so this almost certainitly eliminates loose terminal as a cause.
ok guys thanx for all the info i found the problem tonight it was a dud neutral safety switch when i changed it out for the spare i found in the shed she started right up thanx again for the helpful pointers i just cant believe something so small can cause such a big head ache
