    Default Stuck lifters

Well we've been pulling the engine apart today and have come across a problem. The lifters are stuck in almost impossible to get out, it's like there is a vacum sucking them in when you try to pull them out. We've managed to get 6 out and they required vice grips and levering them out with spanners (using the smaller part in between the 2 machined surfaces). does anyone know any tricks to get them out? We've thought about welding them to something i.e. a slide hammer.

Please any suggestions are welcome we'll be back at it tomorrow

Have you tried lifting them up enough to get the cam out and then pushing them out through the bottom. Sometimes they get a bit of a burr on the bottom from wear against the camshaft.

With the engine on the engine stand put the side plates back on and turn it upside down, remove your crank shaft & pistons which will come out the top of the engine. next you should be able to push all the lifter up from underneath. Then remove the 2 cam shaft retaining screws and remove the cam shaft. then take off the side plates and push the lifters out with your finger.

    cheers
    Scott

Thats the problem scott i dont want to pull the motor out my mates got an engine stand but his escort 2lt turbo pinto motor is on it.
I can get all the lifters at least halfway out to the bottom machined part would this be enough to slide the cam out without them hittting?
Also my bores and piston are in excellant condition i was dreading pulling the head to find damaged bores or pistons

try compressing the lifter and wedging in a flat blade screw driver in the lifter and try flicking it up.

else well buy a trade quality lifter removal tool and you will be able to remove them. it basically fits in the lip of the lifter and and you can pull the lifter up.

    cheers

I had to bash mine out. Pulled the cam out, as well as the rockers and pushrods...put a big screw driver down the push rod hole and wacked it with the hammer.....they came out eventually.....bloody things!

As far as i remember, just turn the motor with the fan. Will make it easier to remove them.

Get some carby cleaner and spray it into the tops of the lifters, this softens the crap that has built up around where the lifter stops at the top of it's movement. Leave for a minute or 2 then the lifters will slide out nice and easy.

We got them out this morning VHPirie style. We tried almost everthing yesterday including scotts second method that got them halway out where we could use the spanner. But eventually we just eased the cam out and knocked them out through bottom. Got a bit done today till we got to the seal on the timing cover when we found out they'd given me a diff seal instead of the timing seal (bloody hopeless people) . Ruined my afternoon let me tell you so had to borrow a mates car to go get the right one. Turns out there's something like one part number difference so he obviously just messed it up a little. Just got to reassemble the sump and head manifold and extractors tomorrow hopefully should be finished by 6pm
