Default Rounding up the parts for phase 3 VC project, need part numbers if possible!

    Hey all

I'm rebuilding my babys engine and some other parts sometimes this year.

I'm chasing the best list of parts i can get, not parts that need to be changed over eg. yella terra head. I'm after parts i can change with what i have.

    Best pistons? XU1's?
    Best rods? Starfire?
    Bigger valves?
Best oil? to use for an type of driving
    Good brakes pads?
    Good Shocks?
Can 5 speeds be brought as aftermarket?
    Racing gasket kit?

I'm after parts that can be brought as aftermarket.

List anythings i might have not listed as i know im still missing a few

IF anybody knows the part numbers let me know, i can round it up faster and yah gotta love trade prices

    Cheers in advance

Best pistons Try ACL Race series, very light weight under 1/2 the weight of the standard pistons, good length skirts. You can buy an ACL Race series rebuild kit which includes bearings, pistons, rings gudgeion pins, gaskets, rear main the works.

As for Rods nothing wrong with the original rods, my last hot 202 ran standard rods just shot peened, lightened & balenced.

Yes BIG Valves, bigger the better you need to make the thing breath, just a note check valve clearences when building the engine, I had a big valve come down and hit the side of the bore and did major damage to engine internals. If you lay the head gasket over the block you will see a spot for the block to be machined out, get it done if you go for big valves.

Oil, a good mineral oil changed every 5,000kms. Personally after trying a few different brands I have been running for a few years now Penrite HPR30 with good results. Use a small bodied oil filter personally I used the genuine GMH ones. If you dont use the GM ones make sure the one you buy has a non return valve in it.

Oil Pump use a JP High volume

Push rods use Crow cams rods, I also suggest using one of their cams buy your push rods, cam, valves, springs, retainers collets all from the same cam supplier that way they will match them all up and you will have better results.

When assembling the engine check the installed spring tension as its not uncommon to get a fault valve spring.

As for timing gears I would go for heilical cut rather tan straight cuts due to noise they whine like a bitch and its very unlikely you will ever strip a decent alloy heilical cut gear anyway.

What are you doing for induction?? Carb or EFI?? If your running a carb you will need a new carb either a Holley or a Weber. It will need to be jetted and tuned to suit the engine. Else if your going EFI you will need to buy an EFI computer to manage fuel & ignition & have it tuned.

Brakes... what sort of driving?? Ultimately VT Twin spots on the front with a 1" master cyl & vac booster to suit, rear discs. Go for slotted discs NOT cross drilled. As for Pads I comprimise braking for dust and use Bendix advance for most driving. On track days & hard driving I have used a high metal content pad but it destroys discs.

Shocks... what sort of driving??? Check out whiteline.com.au suspension is more than just shocks, your springs, shocks, rubbers & alignment should match to give the best results. Im running Whilte line adjustable suspension in my VK, I am hedging towards adjustable Koni shocks to try to get the most out of tuning my suspension. Else check out KYB if your on a budget.

As for a 5 speed look at a T5 out of a 6cyl commodore or 6cyl Falcon, you might be able to adapt a M20 bellhousing to suit the box not costing you alot of money. This will enable you to use a cable clutch, get correct speedo gears for your diff ratio and everything will fit & work.

Seriously dont waste your money on a 202 you will bet more bang for your buck out of a V6, hunt down a V6 5 speed written off VN-VR commodore. It will be better on fuel, give more power for same mods, be more tunable better parts available.

    cheers
    scott

Apparently the standard rods in blue motors are in fact Starfire rods, so no need to change them. As for the bigger valves, some people use 308 valves. There will need to be a bit of work done to the head to fit these, so a few dollars would prolly add up here.

Pads, I've been told to go with Bendix. Apparently they're pretty decent, so I'm definitely getting those. As for shocks, well I've gone with Monroe. I've recently bought a new set of Monroe GT Gas ones, they're actually sitting in their box next to my desk.

Not sure about 5 spds, but Speco have a few 4 speeds in their catalouge. If ur after a 5spd a lot of people go for the Supra of Celica 5spd box's. I have a Borg Warner M76, but apparently they're pretty weak. The M76's I'd say would be easy to pickup at a wrecking yard.

For more info on parts check out www.gimmecarparts.com.au coz they have a lot of gear, and most of it's at a good price. When u first go to their website, select ur car and engine from their list, that makes it a lot easier to identfy parts for ur specific car and motor.

Or just save a few dollars and buy a hot 6 already built. You could save a lot by doing that!
