    Default Oil pumps

Just wondering wat the difference is between the standard JP oil pump and a JP high volume oil pump for a Holden straight 6? I got Repco to order a high volume pump in for me so just wondering how it's actually better, and is it a good improvement over the standard oil pump?

    Cheers,
    Danny

aaahhh..actually you would be better off with the std pump
    on the '6

    why?
as revs climb the std pump can pump enough to supply all the bearings and valave train and fill ya rocker cover with oil
and leave little for the pickup

in years gone by...ppl were sticker pipe cleaners up the inside of the pushrods to STOP oil getting up top

with a hi-vol pump...I suggest you must have an enlarged capacity sump
preferably with 'ears' to keep enuff slippery stuff down low
so yr pump can supply the rods and mains
    otherwise...bang

what happens is that the No1 and 6 mains go down on oil volume (coz the pump has pushed it all up top)
the bearings 'picks up'...lack of oil
    and you get electrical failure

yeah...the No1 conrod has knocked yr alternator
off the block on its way out

I never ran a Hi-vol pump on my racing 6
(triple webers and 230rwhp in a 12 sec Torrie)
the std one set up with proper clearances in the gears in the body
pumped enuff to make it live at 8000

Nah only got a stock sump, but have been looking into a high energy sump...but that won't happen for a while yet.

Thx heaps for ur help and advice. I only decided to get the high volume pump coz it's only $4 more then the std. But yeah, I'm paying $110.99 for it...if I have any troubles I guess I'll sell it and buy a standard one.

Thx again for ur help mate.

take the standard pump and take a die grinder to it, you can gain a couple psi pressure at idle by doing a few little mods etc. also lap top of the pump body to reduce the end float of the pump gears to cover clearance 3-4 thou should be heaps

you can make a cheap high vol pump by putting 308 gears into the 6 cylinder pump

If the standard pump will be sufficient enough I'll just use one of those. I went in to change it 2day but the guy seemed a bit pissed off so I left it, but 2morrow when I drop Brad off to work I'll get it changed over then.

Do u have a new std pump Luke? Has it been used yet? Wat sort is it? Whaddya want for it?
