    Default Front rotors and shockies.

I just pulled apart the struts I'm gonna paint up and use to put all my good gear on and I have a few questions about them.

    1. When I took the split pin out of the stub axle, the nut I could undo with my fingers, is this right? I guess if it's really tight it could stuff bearings hey?

    2. When I put it back 2gether, do I just do the nut up finger tight then put a new split pin in?

    3. The cap the screws the shock into the strut was half off and the shocky had ****loads of movement.......that's bad hey? When we had that suspension in the front of PEAKN6 it was noisy and creaky and just sounded very unsafe....I'm guessng that is why lol.

    4. Is there anyway to tell how old shockies are? I pulled a nice set of Monroe shocks out of it, they look clean as but unsure of age. Obviously gonna put my new ones in, but just curious.

    Cheers,
    Danny.

the reason the castelated nut was loose is probably cause the wheel bearings are worn. when fitting new bearings you normally tighten the nut until you can start feeling resistance when turning the hub and then backing the nut off one castelation etc. if you have excess to a dial inidactor you can also use that to set it up but i don't remember how thats done. just a point of interest, when i fitted 17" wheels to my VN i had trouble with the tyres rubbing on the inside of the strut just below the spring mount, tightning up the wheel bearings fixed this even though they were fine with the standard wheels fitted etc. the only way to really gauge the condition of a shock is to put it on one of those machines they have a specialist suspension places etc. i think munroe stamp a date on there shocks put it could have been sitting on a shelf for a year before being sold etc so i'd not trust it to much etc.

Thx for the help mate. We thought the bearings were worn in the first place from the wierd noises it started to make b4 we pulled the stuts out.

I have another question....does the bearings in strut mounts have to be greased? I dunno how I'd do it coz the bearings are already in the strut mounts, but should I try and get some grease in there b4 I bolt them up, or just leave them? I guess the strut mount bearings won't be used nearly as much as wheel bearings hey.

i'm assuming that your talkingabout the top strut mount bearing. that bearing is there because as a spring compresses it actually torsions as well (i.e. it twists) also for steering wheel movement. if it's an old strut top i guess it couldn't hurt to get a little grease in it but it's not like the bearing is actually doing a lot of work in the sence of a normal wheel bearing etc

Thx for the help mate. I got new Nolathane adjustables. Putting all the suspension and brakes 2gether 2day. Just had to get my springs and some grease, but got them this morning.

Here's a pic I took last night with most of it 2gether....nothing was tightened or had grease yet, just put it 2gether for a photo!

looks good, keep an eye on the rotors if your going to use em for club day racing etc as they are prone to getting hairline fractures around the cross drilled holes when you get em real hot

haha yeah I asked about them in another thread and was told about the cracking. We don't have a track close by so I won't be going to one anytime soon. If they crack from street driving hopefully the warranty will cover them...if not well that's my bad luck haha.

It's all 2gether now. The rotors aren't very easy to move, and the bearings aren't heaps tight or anything....hopefully it's just coz it's all new.

Looking good, dont worry about the rotors not spinning really loose, once assembled take it for a drive then check your bearings, odds are you will need to tighten them up a little as the bearing cups seat into their positions.

    cheers
