well driving home today, i had a clunk clunk bang...............pulled over.....drove another 10 meteres and clunk clunk, then nothing.......put it in drive, 1,2,3 nothing...put it in drive and try to accellerate can see the engine twist, and nothing happens.......
what could i have done ppl..............................diff? tailshaft?
Maybe get someone to look under ur car while i try accelerating.....obviously don't get them to get in right under, just enuf to see under it. If the tailshaft moves it's prolly the diff, it the tailshaft aint moving then maybe it's the trans. If it's the tailshaft there should be some visable signs of damage somewhere.

As VHPirie said, but odds are its an axel, generally they twist off the splines and the splines stay in the diff centre and can be a pain to get out.
cheers

well the tail shaft still spins so it appears its the diff......damn im not sure if its a VH or VS diff as the engine is ecotech and gearbox is VS auto........?!??!?!? what to do.........does anyone know how much and how much trouble putting in a new diff is? any one know any good diff mechanics?
i'd say u could be up for some $$$ can u contact the guy u brought it off or did u do the work on it yourself and see what diff he put in i have here a VL/V8 diff hear done up to chev 9" starnded had $3500 spent and only done a 1000Ks since rebuild PM me if u want more info mate
sounds like a new diff my options, anyone know any good diff specialists?
Just buy a second hand diff and chuck it in urself....save a lot of money.
I've got a Salisbury 8 bolt u can have cheap....$50, from drum to drum...came out of a VH sedan.
Or u could go a better diff and find a VK which has a borg warner under it. The diff will bolt straight up, but if u have a different trans to the car the diff came out, you'll need to bolt up the front of ur tailshaft to the rear of the vk tailshaft.....then that will bolt up fine.....a VL diff will also fit, but the VL tailshafts don't fit the holden 6 tailshafts, so u still need to find a tailshaft from a VK which has a borg warner diff.

i have vs disc brakes would they fit on a standard diff? im yet to indentify the diff i have some pics will put them up later
They should fit mate best of putting the pics up mate
That diff looks like its a standard 6 cylinder 8 bolt Salisbury diff. I reckon you need to upgrade to a late VK-VL Borg Warner diff, far stronger.

Yep it's a Salisbury and no ur disc brakes won't fit. If u got the VK-VL borg warner diff, the brakes could possibly be fit. Depends if the VS was IRS or not, but I'm not sure wat the IRS diffs are.

sorry thats like worth half my car! i can get it rebuilt for $750 so ill keep looking around.......as for the 8 bolt comment.......it has 10 bolts around the outside of it?
All Salisbury/Borg Warner diffs have 10 bolts holding the cover plate on. The word 8 bolt means there is 8 bolts bolted on the crown wheel. Also the cover os round, a larger 10 bolt Salisbury has an egg shape cover.

ok never knew that!
if its too costly i might just sell the car as is
Don't sell the car! Just find another 8 bolt saiisbury and change them over....problem solved.

Best to get an 8 bolt LSD diff, a little bit more stronger than a single spinner 8 bolt.

im having trouble indentifiyin the diff, im going to pull the cover off and see whats stamped into the gear.....if its 3.08, which i think it is what would the differentce be if i put a 2.60 in it?
2.60 ratio would be the gun if your worried about fuel economy!. Other than that, a real pain to get off the line from a standing start.

economy doest bother me, im prob goign to sell the car anyway as i dont use it.....as for off the line im sure it wouldnt be as bad as a stock VH with a 202!
If u check the plates under the bonnet (one of the ones on the strut tower if thats where they are on urs), it will have a code to say which diff is in it. Have a look for the one which says 'AXLE:' and it will have a code there.
Altho if it's not the original diff then that sorta won't work.
Here's a list of the axle codes which I got from this thread:
VB-VK Production Option Availability
GM5 - Axle Ratio - Rear 3.89:1 (VK)
GU4 - Axle Ratio - Rear 3.08:1
GU5 - Axle Ratio - Rear 3.23:1 (VK)
GU7 - Axle Ratio - Rear 2.78:1
GU8 - Axle Ratio - Rear 3.90:1
GV4 - Axle Ratio - Rear 3.36:1
GV7 - Axle Ratio - Rear 3.55:1
G70 - Axle Ratio - Rear 2.60:1
G73 - Axle - Rear - Heavy Duty (VB, VC & VH)
