Just wondering wat sorta oil the manual steering racks have in them? I cleaned up one I pulled off a VB, cleaned it, painted it and put new boots and tie rod ends on it, but I'm not sure when it comes to oil.
How much does it need to have and wat sort of oil? Also where bouts do u top it up to? The ends that comes out of the rack under the boots are oily, but not heaps and I'm not sure if there should be.
Here's a pic of the rack, thought I'd post it even tho it just looks like any other.

Use gear oil, 80w90 or something similar, put it in the bottom of the worm drive. There are two bolts, take them out and take the plate off. Be careful when you do though because there is a spring under there. You don't need to fill it right up, just so you can see the oil on the rack itself, the long bar with the teeth on it. If the seals are worn on the rack ends, it will leak out the boots.
Thx heaps mate.....I rekon I even got some gear oil out in the shed somewhere....bought it for my diff. Thx heaps for ur help!
Are the seals easy to replace? Are they expensive? ...just thought I'd ask incase it all comes out the end haha.![]()
