    Default m76 5spd question

Just wondering if there's some sort of gasket between the front of the trans and the bellhousing?

I took the bellhousing off to clean it up, and it had a few small spots of silicone on it, but not sure if that was to replace a gasket. As the front of the gearbox has 2 bearings which aren't covered, and the bellhousing has an oil seal thing (goes around the input shaft when it's bolted 2gether) like wats behind the harmonic balancer on the crank....so thought I should ask to see if anyone knows.

My engine bay is smoothed off and painted, new suspension is in, and on Wednesday hopefully I can pick my motor up, then bolt the trans onto it and drop it in!

so it just bolts up with nothing in the middle? It seems that's how it was b4, coz there's only very minimal silicone on it...only like 3 small bits of it around, so I guess there would of been heaps on there if it was to be used as a gasket.

No gasket there. Who knows why the silicone was there. It's a bit like that thing that sticks out from the right hand side of the steering column with the little arrows on it. Not many people seem to know what thats for either.

Ancient thread as I can obviously see, but i'm writing something here for future reference for anyone else who wants to know the answer to this question.

Yes, there is meant to be sillicone as a sealer between the bellhousing and the gearbox gear housing. If you take the bellhousing off one of these, you will notice that there is an oil labyrinth or gallery that allows oil to flow from the input shaft bearing down to the smaller cluster shaft bearing. You must use sillicone around this or an oil leak will more than likely result!. Also, if you've got the bellhousing removed it might pay to also replace the input shaft oil seal while you're at it. These things are real cheap and it may save you a lot of hassles down the track.

    Cheers!
