    Default gearbox questions

hey guys and galls just a quick question, im under the impression that the v8 vh's had a m41 turbo-hydromatic auto does this fit onto a 202? cuz im up for a new box but i have plans in the future for a v8. also i think the vl's had a m40 trimatic like the vh's 202 (tho i assume stronger) so if i just get my current box rebuilt (they said they can do it to handle a v8) will that just bolt up to a vl v8?

also now i could be wrong but if i use a vl block, vn efi heads will bolt onto it? cuz im planning on running efi.

any comments or suggestions would be great

    Short answer: No.

The bell housing and bolt pattern of the turbo box will be very different to that required for a holden 6. IIRC the old 202 used the old "aussie" bolt pattern with the m20 & Trimatic autos. This was different to that used on the V8's (m21 pattern) and the input shafts were different.

I don't think it will bolt up to the VL block - it also depends on weather it is a trimatic or turbo bolt pattern.

Further more, the VN heads will bolt onto any Holden 308/4 block. You will need to change your inlet/exhaust manifolds and camshaft as the ports and valves are arranged differently. It is a very common project and all the parts are readily available.

ok thanks so there is no box that will fit onto both a 202 and a 308? its just my current trimatic is on its way out and i have plans prob next year to put a v8 in it, thinking i could get that part done now saves me doing it twice.

Uhhh - ok. Well the V8 traumatic will have a different bell housing, input shaft, flex plate, starter motor (I think), torque converter for a start. I'd suspect the internals will be significantly different too but you would have to talk to an auto guy to give you an exact run down.

bugger swapping heads and crap, just grab an VR 304 you can get the lot for around $1800 and drop that in, they'll probably throw the tank in as well.
