    Default Rear Axle Shims ?

Hi, I have a lot of movement in the rear axle of the VK. It is a 10 bolt salisbury disc brake model. It is as if the wheel bearing is loose like on a trailer. I can get a lot of movement when I put my hands top and bottom of the wheel and push and pull. It did this before and after I replaced the wheel bearing, collar and seal yesterday. I have heard that there might be shims that are available to correct this problem. Can anyone help please? cheers

Make sure you got a disc brake bearing kit, the seals are different from disc to drum. If you have a drum brake seal it is thinner and will cause the axle to move in and out. The bearings themselves are the same, just the seal is different.

Yes it was the right kit. I have spoken to a mech who said the movement is common, just some worse than others, and that they used to put shims in to correct it. I am hoping someone out there has fixed a similar problem. The left hand side gets a rattle up at low speed especially when backing off. I figure the rattle comes from the movement in the hub that in turn effects the floating caliper and causes the noise. I will put new caliper guide pins in this week as they are worn a bit. The uni's, centre bearing and CV are all okay as this is where I 1st thought the noise was coming from. Any clues??

Personally I have never heard of shimming an axle. Was the retainer bent at all when you put it back together? As in all four sides dead flat with no bow in them?

Good question, I dont think I even looked at the retainer. Will do later this week. I am now thinking that the movement may also be coming from the diff end, i.e. bearings, spider gears or shims that end.
