Default VK not running again :(

hey everyone, yet more problems since i converted my car to manual. im thinking its cause of the dizzy. i swapped to an electronic dizzy off a blue motor and since then it hasnt been running right.

are the coils different between EST and HEI electronic distributors?

i can get it to fire, but it coughs and splutters and wont rev up no matter how much i pump the accelerator, and dies as soon as i stop pumping the pedal.
my accelerator pump in my holley wasnt working properly so i slapped the varijett back on hoping it would run.. still didnt. thats whats making me think its something to do with the dizzy.

is it possible that my timing has gotten stuck up high? ive tried retarding the timing a little but still wouldnt start so i dont know.

hey mate, have u tried pulling the dizzy out and skip it over a few cogs?

with my car we could never get it started, it would just fire a bit but wouldnt run. well today (bout 2 weeks later lol) we seen that the rockers weren't moving so we pulled one of the side plates off and the lifters werent pumping up. long story short, we packed the oil pump full of grease chucked it back on and viola, she ran nice. but if u didnt pull ur motor apart this prolly wouldnt be the prob, but id try skippin a few cogs on the dizzy.

    nope.........

ask VHPirie, he knows alot more bout it than me. he did pretty much all the wiring side of things for mine.

also not sure if their on this forum but a couple o other really helpful ppl are PUB247 and HDT202

altho we did it with an EFI motor we now have put a blue motor in with the EFI gear on it

Did you turn over the motor between dizzy changes? It is possible that your timing might be 180 deg out.

yes the coils are different between hei and est, but it does sound like your 180 deg out on your dizzy

I don't think the coils are any different from EST to EFI/HEI. I'm pretty sure they all have the same part number.

Maybe your balancer has slipped? This would then give u an inaccurate reading when doing the timing. If you pull no1. plug out, then turn the motor over until the timing mark is on 0, no.1 piston should be up top as far as it goes...if it isn't then the balancer has slipped....which means u need to put another one on...roughly $20 for a new one.

If it isn't that then I'd try and work through everything which could be causing it to not work. Your motor needs fuel, compression and ignition to work. You can test the compression by using a compression tester which screws into ur spark plug hole. To test for fuel I guess u can look down the barrel of the carby and see if it sprays when ya pump the accelerator. For the electrics....put a timing light onto all leads...if it flashes for all of them then they are working (if one or more don't work, try replacing the leads, or replace the dizzy cap and rotor button first if u want). I'd then move onto the plugs. Pull one of the plugs out, put the lead on the end then hold it close to something metal while someone turns they key...u should see it spark....if not then replace it.

Just a few things to try....oh yeah and like PEAKN6 said, make sure u have oil pressure just incase it's that which is stuffing ya up.

Let us know how ya go.

backfiring through the carby generaly means that it is firing with the inlet valve open, timing is a fair way out for that to happen, if your positive that the balancer is correct take your plugs out and turn the motor to 6 degrees btdc on number one then adjust the dizzy to suit, i.e line the electrodes in the dizzy so as the rotor button is pointing at number 1 post then put it all back together

We've had the backfiring through the carb b4 on the skidwagon....was really loose rockers...but you'd hear them for sure if they were loose so prolly ain't them.
