just finished putting an xf falcon weber on my 202, but it has turned out to run like ****. the only good thing is that it doesn't hesitate on initial takeoff like the varijet did. it still has a big flat spot as the secondaries open. it had less power uses about double the amount of fuel, and occasionally stalls at a red light and idles like poo. i havent tryed to tune it yet just wondering why every1 else says they work a dream and mine doesnt.
Maybe caus you havent tuned it lol. Sorry not being a smartass but you need to tune them, remember they come off a 4.1 (i think) litre engine and going on a 3.3 Litre, so they need tuning, if your not experienced in tuning, then get it professionally done, also did you rebuild it before putting it in?
haha yer i know it needs a tune i was just hoping it would be pretty close before i start playing with it lol. i just realised that i didnt hook up the idle solenoid doh so i just did that should stop it stalling. and nah i didnt rebuild it. it was working fine on the falcon it came off, i just wanna get it running pretty good before i rebuild it...u know in case its not worth it and i decide to put the old 1 back on, but yer i might go out and get a rebuild kit soon.
The main reason for rebuilding them is if they have been sitting dry the gaskets perish, but if its off a running (rare lol) falcon then it shouldnt be to bad, still a rebuild wouldnt be to bad.
Personelly i will be rebuilding and before i evccen start my conversion.
It will need a tune, to get rid of the flat spots etc, but it should run without a tune, just not its best.
aight so i bought a rebuild kit for it today going to do it tomorrow. i noticed that the idle mixture screw does nothing! so a bit of a worry there, i'll see whats up when i pull it apart.
Idle mixture screw is the one just below the Vacuum advance connection on the base of the carby. The idle mixture screw will adjust the air/fuel mixture only at idle.
Sorry cant be of more help then making sure your adjusting the rtight thing. Though im biting the bullet and going to be doing this conversion very soon. You wouldnt have the part number for the adapter? did u use the redline one?
yer thats the screw but i wind it all the way in it should almost stall/run rough...it doesnt and doesnt change if its all the way out either.
sorry dont have the part number but yer i used a redline one, also got a nice redline chrome air filter...only problem is you need some spacers between the adaptor plate and the carby otherwise the pump arm hits the adaptor plate. now all i can get my hands on are 2 kinda cork like ones when really i would like an aluminium one but no-one can seem to help me with that so might have to make one myself.
Spacers, sorry i cant be to much help as im only researching this before i give myself the headache of attempting it. But you use the spacer from the varijett on the bottom side of the adapter, and the weber adapter on the top side. So you use both carbies spacers and that will raise it to the correct height, as far as im aware.
The screw might not be doing anything caus its possibly stuffed, you will find this out on the rebuild either way i guess. Good luck. Also did you make a custom braket for your accelerator cable, and are you using a manual or automatic choke?
alright rebuild done but did very little. i must be missing something thats important, i think i'll go take it to a workshop, hopefully its something simple. all the diaphragms where good (changed them anywas) just put another seal on the idle mixture screw cuz air was getting past it.
atm i got no choke set up but i think i'll go manual setup cuz i could never get the varijet one to work properly so i'll go the easy solution. im using the ford accelerator cable and bracket. the backet just bolts on to the carby. u just need to find a different way to attach it to the pedal. i couldnt understand why ppl were saying u need a v8 cable??? also the ford bracket seems to have an extra space for a manual choke.
Ok, unless something is broken in the carby i dont know either. Probly best to get a good carby tuner to take a look for you.
What did you have to do with the ford cable to mate up with the holden pedal?
Sorry so many questions but i want to use everyone elses mistakes to learn from before i start my conversion.
alright went to a carby specialist got it all tuned up, needed a new idle jet as well. it runs well now but discovered my dizzy is rooted and timing is all over the place so when i get that sorted should see some greater improvements.
however im not entirely happy with it. for starters it has the same power as the varijet and roughly the same economy the only good thing is that it has an initial punch off the line, no hesitation like the varijet (but that was prob due to poor tuning)
Also the mechanic said that he has worked with alot of varijets and he reckons they are a better carby for a 202, even if it was worked.
so im going to wait till i get the timing sorted out before i decide which carby i should use...this bloke got the weber running really well so im thinking if i take the varijet to him it will be better than the weber.
also im pretty sure the dizzy was rooted before the conversion was done so comparisons are taken with inaccurate timing
It would be interesting to see what difference the dizzy makes. But i still find it weird that the fuel economy isnt much better from the webber. I heard of people getting up to 100k's more per a tank, and id say about 50 on average.
Also what did you do to make the cable fit?
for the cable...its pretty hard to explain...there is a plastic plate attached to the cable that (on the ford) screws into the firewall on cabin side (not in the engine bay) this holds the cable there so when u press the accelerator it pulls the inner cable and not the whole thing aight...anyways when putting it on my commodore this plastic plate is screwed onto the firewall on the opposite side in the engine bay...to be honest i cant remember exactly why i had to do this but prob due to clearance issues near the pedals or something...then its kinda the same as the holden cable attaching it to the pedal, but i used a little plastic fitting i found in the shed to hold it secure... its not hard once u get in and have a look...i'll take some pics soon if ya like cuz i dunno how much sense i made.
