hey guys im just needing to do the timing and firing order on my vk 5ltr
the dizzy its self hasnt been toched . when i bought the motor it was running fine. so i know the timming on the dizzy dosnt need to be done
but i need to know the exact way to do the timing and firing order to have the car running,i had a friend try and do it but the car was firing and back firing and throughing flames out the carby.
so can somone tell me the best and easiest way to do this
thanks heaps
Firing order is 12784563.The best way to adjust the ignition timing is to get the engine to operating temperature and then disconnect the vaccum advance hose and plug it off and then use a timing light connect to the battery and number1 ignition lead and adjust the timing to 6 degrees btdc at 850rpm(engine running ofcourse). But if running pulp can boost it up to 8 or even 10degrees btdc. Then once you have finished adjusting your timing i would suggest adjusting your mixture screws. The best way of adjusting the idle mixtures is once finish your ignition timing adjust the mixture screws as follows(whilst engine running).Should be 2 screws on either side of the carbi (4 barrel rochester/quadrajet M4MC)whine one screw in as far is it can go without stalling then unscrew it till the engine revs its highest/or best running of engine (either in or out) then do the other side once that is done then just readjust your idle by screwing in or out the idle screw.Simple as that.

You have most likely got the plug leads arranged 180 degrees out of sinc with the crankshaft. Remember the crankshaft turns twice for every turn of the distributor, so when you line up the timing marks on the balancer number 1 cylinder can be on the fireing position or at the top of the exhaust stroke. You have most likely set no.1 to fire on the top of the exhaust stroke. If you rotate the leads 180 degrees around the distributor from their current position it should run sweet.
setting up the timing can be a bit daunting if you don't know what your doing, firstly the no 1 lead should be at the 1 o'clock position then follow the firing order in a clockwise direction 12784563 ,remove no 1 plug and rotate the engine by hand until the no 1 piston is at its highest point I use a small screwdriver to do this and be careful not to damage the piston, once this is done remove the dizzy cap and the rotor should be pointing to 1 o'clock if its not remove the dizzy and relocate it so the button does point to 1 o'clock put the cap back on and replace the no 1 plug and lead now try to start the car if it backfires its 180 out if this is the case firstly rotate the engine by hand to get the rotor to no 1 again then (1 o'clock) rotate the engine 1 full turn (the dizzy will turn 180 to 7 o'clock position) then remove the dizzy and put it back to the 1 o'clock position and then it should be all ok.
does this make sense ,I know it sounds confusing if ya dont understand how it all works .
if its all too confusing just grab someone who does understand id say.
Cheers hope this helps

i have done this. the car dosnt backfire. but its just not starting. it neally does
Have you tried moving the dizzy from its current position to see if it will start ?
Im guessing you have but just need to ask
secondly it could be the coil or the module in the dizzy
Cheers
how much would i move the dizzy ??
the coil is brand new. the dizzy i know was working when i bought the motor bout 5 months ago
You would only need to turn the dizzy about 1 cm each way from TDC,if you wired the coil wrong only for a quick turn of the motor I would put money on the module being fried,if all else fails mark the dissy position and take a pic aswell then remove the dizzy and take it to an auto elec to have the module tested.
When a module is on its way out (being fried) the car will almost start but not quite or if it does start it will run like a bucket of ****,then the next time you go to start it ,it just wont start!!!
