Smile carby choice and timing for a 355 stroker VH

hey. i just bought a c.o.m.e stage 2 355 stroker vh. it currently has the stock rochester carby on it, the guy must have taken off the bigger carby b4 he sold it 2 me, anyways what size carby should i be running for this engine? it has bigger fuel lines and a fairly big pump. I wad thinkin a 650dp holley? does this sound about right? also what should the dizzy be set 2 for a 355? she still fires (coughs and splutters) after the engine has been switched off. if anyone can head me in the right direction that would be appreciated. thanks

650 holly is no bigger than the quadrajet anyways and no better so I doubt he changed carbies, he just knew what was going on . If it's still running after it's been shut off then it needs better fuel or less compression

the 650 holley is better in that it has much larger floatbowls than the quaddy... mate had a similar combo and tried both carbies, the holley kitted up right made more power.

take it to get dyno tuned at somewhere reputable. they'll be able to fix the dieseling run on problem.

You can make a quadrajet out power a holley easy enough. They need a few things done. like a better filter. But they are a better carby for street driving and can make the same power, just that not everyone understands how they work (because it's different to a holley). Back in the day of carbies there was a surge of interest in Quadrajets in the early 90s when everyone chucked all their holleys to the tip, this was a mini age of qaudrajets for a few years but since then fuel injection took over and people seem to have forgotten about that last stand of the carbies and the quadrajet tech

I agree with Greenfoam, stick with the quadrajet, ive personelly had nothing but trouble with holleys. People say it takes a certain person to tune them right, but in my opinion you shouldnt need to be qualified in a carby just to be able to tune it. I would never buy a holley of any sort, theirs alot better brands then holley.

cheers everyone. yea i have spoken 2 a few blokes around town that build hotrods and deal with v8 engines and they seem 2 think i need somewhere between a 650-750cfm carby. when i take the air filter off and give it a rev the butterflys dont open, it seems to be on choke which is why it is using a ****load of petrol so im not sure wether the carby is stuffed or what but im looking 2 upgrade anyways. what sort of manifold do u guys reckon i should run with? currently there is an edelbrock manifold but i have been told 2 upgrade to a torker manifold. i wouldn't have a clue im only new to carby engines!!! thanks for your help

sounds like it has old style heads and you want good performance so i would try a stripmaster manifold and prob a 750 double pumper.Check your timing for the run on prob,if that is close then maybe he has changed carbs and it is not tuned right.I would go a holley over a quaddie any day, have had both and a DECENT holley is better.Actually if i was you i would prob get a barry grant mighty demon for $600 to $700 bucks
