Removing the pinion out of a diff.

Anyone know how it's done? Do ya just get a hammer and tap it out, or is it held in the carrier by sumfin?

    Cheers,

Just tap it out. Best thing to do is put the nut back on, have it flush with the tread on the pinion and then tap.

Hey does anyone know if the crown and pinion off a 25 spline diff will fit a 28 spline diff? It should hey, coz the only difference is the centre? I sold my VL diff on ebay and the guy said he thought it was a 28 spline 4 pin diff, and he only wanted it for the gears. He said he wasn't sure if they'll still fit.....anyone know?

Is this for a VK Borg Warner diff? If so, yes it does fit.

Nah the diff I sold is a VL borgy diff, and I think the other guy has a VL diff too, but his is 28 spline 4 pin. He's getting it shortened to go under a rodeo, and he just wants my gears to use in his diff.

Ok well I've run into a problem. I pulled the axles and centre out, now I can't seem to get the bolt on the end of the pinion undone.....I guess I should have loosened that b4 pulling the diff to bits. My rattle gun won't even undo it, altho it seems my rattle gun could be dying coz it doesn't seem to go as hard as it normally does. I would use a breaker bar on it, but now that the axles and centre is out it's gonna be hard holding it while undoing the bolt.....grrr.

    Any ideas?

Did the same thing when my 10 bolt sals broke and took it apart. I just put the diff on a nice size block of wood, used a breaker bar, got a mate to stand on the diff and used a sledge hammer to bash the breaker bar. It did undo in the end.

the easiest way if you have access to a workshop and some steel is to get some steel plate 6-10mm thick,100mm wide, about 300mm long. at one end cut a hole in the center big enough so you can get a socket on the nut, then drill 4 holes to line up with the 4 holes in the yoke flange, tap and fit 4 bolts to use as studs. shape the rest of the steel like a spanner handle. now you can use the forementioned homemade spanner to stop the flange from spinning whilst you use a socket and large power bar to undo the tight ****er.

i'll be making one shortly so i can do some work at home, i'll post a pic once it's made it your interested (might not be for a week or 2 however)

Thx guys.....the home made spanner sounds like a good idea...but don't think I could make it in time. The guy which bought the diff is coming Sunday. He only wants it for the 3.45 gears, and he said if I want to pull the gears out I can keep the rest, and he'll still pay me the whole price, and he said he'll give me his 3.08 gears if I wanna put it back together and resell it. I'd like to hold onto the diff (changed my mind after I put it on ebay haha, but will part with it if it comes to that) so thought I'd try and pull the gears out. I'm working the next 3 nights and sleeping the next 2 days so haven't got much time to play with it.
