yes, you need to apply power to the following pins in the round socket in the back of the dash.
if you're looking into the back of the dash you need to apply power from the battery positive to the far right upper pin and also to the to the left of it. one is constant power for memory for clock/trip computer etc and the other is ignition power. You also need to earth the pin just to the left of the second pin.
if the display is fairly dim you might have dry joints inside the dash.
