Default VK EST issues

Houston, we have a problem. Ok here's the deal. '85 VK Berlina, 202 motor, duel fuel etc etc. Now, normally on these little sweeties when you turn the ignition key the little battery light comes on as well as the est light. When the motor is running, the est light and others go out right? Not with this one. The battery light comes on and goes off as it should but there's no est light coming. Shhh dont make me go check the bulb coz thats fine. I know it's fine coz by the time we get to the end of the driveway (sometimes further) the EST light comes on as bright as a button. I dont have oil pressure gauge, temp gauge, wipers dont work and the heater stops all when that darling little EST light comes on and yes, it runs like someone has tried to use horse manure as fuel. Now, the mantype person is REALLY cross with this car and the whole EST idea and is determined to remove or bypass the EST completely and take it back to the old style 202 workhorsegoddess type motor. WITHOUT all the electrical bulldust that goes with it. Now, I'm not as gunhoe as he is and I figure to ask is to learn. So I am asking, can what he wants to do be done and if so HOW? I dont want him blowing the car (or himself) up. Thanks in advance for any and all input into this little dilemma.

Yes you can throw the est parts and put in another distributor from a VH Commodore with electronic ignition. There is a thread about doing this on the top of the page when you first go into the VK section. You can even put an old points type distributor out of a red motor in it if you want but it wont be as good as an electronic distributor because it will have a weaker spark and the points need to be replaced on a regular basis.
