im driving a VH with a blue 202 motor, the problem i have got is when the engine is stone cold it runs great but once it reaches normal operating temperature it runs like absolute sh*t, i have fitted new plugs air/fuel filters, i am thinking that maybe the timing is out but am not sure, what do you think?
any help would be much appreciated
well we will give it a go ay, ill take it out and see if that changes anything.
its leaded, i use unleaded with lead replacement additives, valve problems maybe?
Try another coil.Sometimes they only break down when they are hot.
How hot are we talking about, once its got to normal operating temp? `5mins?
Does the vh have an autochoke?, guessing it does.
It could be stuck on, would be easy to check out....lots of smoke out the exhaust when it is warm and the choke butterfly/valve closed across the throttle opening.
no smoke does kind of smell like its running a bit rich but nothing of concern and yes just when it reaches normal operating temp.

just to update you all took the thermostat out and there was really no difference although it was stuck open, is there any way of checking the timing without a timing gun?
In a rough sort of way, yes. However, timing isnt the sort of thing that needs adjustment unless the distributor has been disturbed.
Given that it is idling fine when cold, suspect a heat related issue.
Given that you have checked that the choke valve is fully open when hot?, it could be ignition related.
The electronic distributor module can give problems when hot/cold(in that hump at the base of the dizzy(check that it is screwed down tightly, or the reluctor coil could be parting company. This would all show up an an engine tuning scope if this was the problem......it may be worth getting it down to your local garage if a quick fix is wanted.
Changing the module for a known working one would be one thing to try, but they are ~$70 new, so only good if you have one to swap over with.
"Runs Like **** when its hot."
Do you mean its missing when hot, it could be the leads breaking down, or as suggested the coil or dizzy.
If your talking about poor acceleration then have a look at the choke settings
If your running stock manifolds then they could be warping when hot (dissimilar metals) and letting air in past the inlet gasket effecting the carbie
well it could be missing but not sure, i will pick up some leads this week sometime and see if its that, how much would i be looking at for a second hand coil?
not the thermostat, not the spark leads, fitted them today all they did was stop the manifold vacum gauge from jumping around.....
