Hi
I've got a VK SL auto (ex-police) with a 304 , 108,000 km. Stock black motor as far as I can tell, no extractors etc.
Any tips on easy and economical ways to get power up a bit? I'm thinking 180 - 200 kw would be nice, tuned for mainly street & highway cruising.
I read that the manual versions were up specced to about 177 kw and one of the Brock ones to about 196kw.
Any tips on if it's worth dropping in a later motor? Or just work with the one I have?
And does anyone know any good places on Brisbane Northside that might be able to do the work?
Thanks
Pilgrim
yeh the vk groupA brocks coped the 196-200kw motor depending on who you talk too, a mild cam with injected vn 5ltr heads(ment to flow 400hp from factory and are a straight bolt up) and either rejet the rotchester carbie to suit or put a 650 holley on it with a nice inlet manifold, not sure how that will go economy wise though, but will pull some decent power for the car, or the other option especially if you don't want to cut holes in the bonnet for the air filter is to drop an injected 5ltr motor into it, out of vn-vs or the vt roller cam motor(195kw) and even a mild cam with exhaust and a nice tune would pull very nice power and economy although this would be the more expensive route as you have to change fuel lines to suit the injected motor and a few other things that i'm not sure on, but is a popular conversion. good luck with it all.
what i did for my 308 was:
decent Crane cam
Crane anti pump lifters ( to suit cam )
Crane double valve spings ( to suit cam )
Crane chrome-moly retainerts & collets
Yella Terra 1.65 roller rockers
and a rebuilt bottom end
my motor being a Brock already has the big valve/ported heads & ported manifold all i needed was to machine the heads to accept the valve springs.
it dynoed @ 230rwhp ( or roughly 230kw engine ). after rebuild and mods the power increased around 50rwhp from when i first had it on the dyno and it's a completely different car to drive and sounds completely different too. cost around the $2000 mark DIY.
ps: forget fuel economy though when you go a decent cam......
Thanks for the suggestions.
Last night I saw a VH with an injected 5.0 litre dropped in. Got me thinking.
