my 202 carby motor out of my vk has pretty much had it
im not sure weather to get another 202 or get an rb 30 motor
my vk is 5 speed manual, just wondering what would be involved in putting an rb 30 into my vk,

it will slot straight in then you need the elctrics, engineers cert, etc.

    Whats the current motor doing?

shifting down and making a whirring noise is normal for a box of its age, maybe a general service and clean out will quieten it down, ticking would most likely be the rocker gear and/or lifters on the top end of the motor, caused usually by varnish buildup, an engine flush can cure this, but it can also stuff an old engine up by clogging the oil pickup in the sump..

The ticking noise is the engine pinging due to running lean, the carby probably just need a kit put through it and a general clean up. Your timing could also be out,

If you want a short fix, retart the timing about 2 degrees, if that stops the ticking it is pining. if it keeps ticking it is as vnV8driver said your engine is probably varnished or worse coked ( common for 202s) up, which mean the oil hasn't been changed properly and that will mean a tear down and clean up at the mimimun, worse case ssenario a full rebuild

Cant change the EST timing, just really upsets it when you try, so dont bother.

Best solution is to rmove the EST and replace with a Blue or VK EFI Dissy. The EST is nothing but trouble and very hard to fault diagnose. For 50bux you can have the Electronic dissy in, and will eliminate a heap of things.
Since installing the EFI Dissy in my VK, It runs smoother, more responsive, fuel economy literally went from 31.5l/100k's to 13.36L/100k's, and it hasnt broken down or ran rough since.
Start by replacing the dissy, then look at the lifters. To see if the bottom end is stuffed, do a compression test.

put your foot on the clutch with the car stationary if the noise goes away, it is in either the gearbox or the thrust bearing, if it doesn't go away it is the spigot bearing in the end of the crank.
