When I used to have a carbie 253 in my VH I found 10-12 worked well with premium. 6 on ULP.

On a side note, can anyone tell me for sure, does a old school 308, HQ era, have full vacumn advance at idle?? ie the vacumn advance is connected to full manifold vacumn instead of a ported fitting on the carb like most normal engines.

    Cheers, Jeff.

point breaker ignitions factory setting is 6 deg BTDC
Electronic ignition is 10 deg BTDC same as EFI engines

as for the question about "ported" or "full" vacuum. HX ie 1977 was the first to have the "ported" vacuum system prior to that EPA law change "full" vacuum was available.
BUT.. Just to clarify abit, full vacuum is available on all holden V8's. But from 1977 on, a ported system was also added. Through a series of thermostatic switches ( where the vacuum hoses go to the fittings in the cooling system) the vacuum is ported while the engine is cold and full vacuum is given once the engine has reached operating temperture. Models with electric choke also have an electrical switch which is mounted near the carby on the manifold. This why it is extremely important to make sure you run a thermostat in you car, cause if you dont your engine will never reach full operating temperature and stay there.
