between the ecotec v6 and the 202 which engine has more potential?
this would be in a vk.
ecotec has great potential for less money than the 202. 202's can make good power but need a ****load of money thrown at them

The ecotec is still a recent engine so there are alot of upgrades available and not much to do to get them back to brand new condition in the first place.
Also who you have contacts with can effect the engine you have. I like having my old 308 because everyone around my town has parts for it. Just 2 weeks ago i got a set of exhaust manifolds for free!
A straight ecotec is going to give you ~145kW with no mods at all. To get that out of a 202, you'd probably need to be spending $5-8K at a guess and have something that is no where as driveable as the v6 or economical to run. There is possbily not as much room for improvement in the v6, which just really points to the fact that the 202 is technology from the 60s.
Of course doing an engine transplant has many factors too other than just the cost of the motor, computer and other running gear......engineering fees etc. Spending the money on either is unlikely to be returned if selling the vehicle, be better off buying a 2nd hand vx or similar for the same coin.
There probably been 500 202's run faster times in a VK weight car than the fastest V6 ever has. But it's not because the 202 is better, it's just that no ones tried as hard with the V6, in theory the V6 should be alot faster given the same amount of effort
i think ill stick with a 202 for a while until i have all th parts for a conversion. Then ill have time to work on the rest of the car.
good point, also the fact that many of the mods to make a 202 better would already be on an ecotec due to the way technology moves along. Im sure the ecotec runs a higher comp ratio with better balancing, higher flow intake and fuel injection to boot. All on a stock motor.
But 202's are easier to work on thats for sure.
Im in the process of converting my V6 into my VK, I have completely stripped the VK and converted the whole lot, wiring, running gear and all which has only taken me a couple of days so far. Sure the 202 is definately easier to work on but the V6 is sure worth it. When I saw that baby being lifted into the engine bay it encorouged me to work harder to finish it. If you have a complete V6 running gear including loom sitting around and a few mates to help brake their back and have a fair idea on engines...then I would say V6 for sure.
"Loved my VK since the day I layed eyes on her"
I'd go an RB30 over a V6 anyday. Lot more aftermarket bits available which means getting more power out of them is reasonably cheap. But at the end of the day ya can't beat the sound of a V8. If ur building a motor to get a fair bit of power out of, the RB30 would be the way to go.
