Default VK 304 not starting (fuel pump?)

Hey guys, I can't get my VK V8 started after tinkering with the mechanical fuel pump yesterday. It was running fine but when I put the fuel pump back in and tried to start it, it wouldn't go. It's got spark, compression, etc etc But I keep cranking it over and nothing happens, I've put fuel in the carby and it just burns that off and dies again.
What could possibly happen to the pump to make it fail?
Oh and is there another fuel pump in the fuel tank or is it just the mechanical one that is attached to the timing cover?
Could low fuel level in the fuel tank cause this problem?

if it starts when you put fuel down the carby i would say that it is not getting any fuel to the carby Could be your low fuel level in the fuel tank or maybe it just needs a new fuel pump

Yeah but all I did was remove it, replace the gasket, and straight back on. Apparently it is a new pump as well. Does the lever have to go in a certain way?
