find #1 lead ie get 1st cylinder at tdc n check where rotor is, then arrange leads in order with firering order on the manifold

yea i relise that now. but ive got the leads sorted now but the car wont even start now. all it seems to do is turn over and every now then a puff noise comes from the carby. would this be cause by ****y wrong plugs or something? becasue the car did have ngk platnum but i cheeped out and got the normal ones this time.

The "puff" is most likely a back-fire out the carby. Normally caused by bad timing or the leads in the wrong spot?

Nope the plugs won't cause that. Sounds like you've got the leads 180 deg out.

This is how I set the plug leads.

    1. remove the distributor cap.

    2. rotate engine clockwise until the timing mark on the balance lines up with the mark on the timing case. whilst doing so note the direction the rotor button turns.

    3. Note the position of the rotor button then replace the distributor cap.

    4. fit no.1 lead to the position the rotor is pointing to. (note number 1 cylinder is the closest cylinder to the front of the car on the right bank. Number 2 is the first cylinder on the left bank, number three the second cylinder on the right bank and so on.

    5. Arrange the rest of the leads around the distributor in the direction the rotor spins in the order of 1 - 2 - 7 - 8 - 4 - 5 - 6 -3.

    6. Try and start the car. If it won't start the engine was out of phase by 180deg. Simply rotate the plugs around the distributor 180deg and the car will start.

    I hope this helps.
