hey i have a vb commodore which has stripped the timing gears behind the front end seal. anyone know how to replace them without taking the camshaft out?
there is no way the gear needs to be pressed off and on in a decent size press cam out and off to the engineers or workshop
I tune the oldschool way fear on the passengers face and knuckle colour cant go wrong
tabbacco is still my favorite vegetable
you can knock the cam gear on with a mallet but cam will need to come out also need a puller to get it off

if you have air con and dont mind paying for a regas pull out the airconditioning condensor.

i strongly advise against hitting the gear into the cam with a mallet. in fact i doubt you'll get it on with a mallet, when i did mine i wound the press up to about 1500kg to press it onto the cam, and that was with the gear in the freezer at -30'c
get a setup with a steel crank gear and alloy cam gear, if you like a bit of whine under throttle go a set of crow straight cuts, they sound good and you wont hear em at idle, price would be similar to the stock helical gears.
once youve removed the rockers and pushrods, a screwdriver under the circlip, pliers on the edge of the body (only the very top part that doesnt go down the lifter bore) to prise them out.
oil pump has to be moved out so the drive gear disengages from the cam
i ended up pulling the gear off in pieces, taking the fuel pump off, heating up the gear in the oven, using a block of wood to hold the cam shaft in place, and using a hammer on the centre of the gear.
worked great i though lol
Yep thats the way to do it. You can drill holes near the centre of the gear so it comes off easily. You can take the fuel pump off and use a pry bar against the fuel pump lobe on the cam while you tap the new gear on. Warming the gear up makes it heaps easier to put on.
It might be a good idea to pull the sump off and clean the oil pickup strainer because they can block up after the cam gear strips so you have low oil pressure.
