in short yep - 2.78 is very tall indeed. I've never changed the diff gears before - but if you put short gears in it will launch much harder if thats what your after. If you do highway driving you'll hate them.
It will rev it's head off on the open road.

I got a VB SLE as well, did have a 253 trimatic and 2.78 diff....then changed to a 4spd....the diff gears still let it down ALOT. Chucked in a borgy 3.23 (VK diff, similar to VL, just different gears and is slightly shorter) and it was great! Way better take off...dunno bout skids tho, never tried one in it on the new diff. A 3.45 could only be better tho!

    what gearbox have you got?
If its a Trimatic heres some pretty standard figures for you so 2864rpm @ 100km/hr with either an aussie 4 speed or Traumatic

    Gear Km/h per 1000 RPM Km/h @3000 RPM Km/h @5000 RPM
    --------------------------------------------------------
    1 13.75 41 69
    2 21.82 65 109
    3 34.91 105 175

    Km/h RPM (in Gears)
    -------------------------------
    1 2 3
    -------------------------------
    10 728 458 286
    20 1455 917 573
    30 2183 1375 859
    40 2910 1833 1146
    50 3638 2291 1432
    60 4365 2750 1719
    70 3208 2005
    80 3666 2291
    90 4125 2578
    100 4583 2864
    110 3151
    120 3437
    130 3724
    140 4010
    150 4296
    160 4583
    170 4869

Gear Change RPM drop (change @3000) RPM drop (change @5000)
    -------------------------------------------------------------
    1 -> 2 -1110 (to 1890) -1850 (to 3150)
    2 -> 3 -1125 (to 1875) -1875 (to 3125)

Hmmm.....something don't seem right. The centre bearing should line up. We've done the borgy conversions a few times....but we used the rear half of the vk borgy tailshaft with the front half of the current tailshaft.....the centre bearings has always lined up for us!

The exhaust could be a bit big for the engine Im running something similar on my Injected 304.
If your only running the super turbo muffler (standard sport muffler pretty good quality) you could do a couple of things
Get a glass packed sport muffler for the front & the biggest mother of a hot dog you can get for the rear. It will give the nice V8 growl but take the edge off the drone. Really to reduce the drone you need to do smaller maybe twin 1 3/4" pipes instead of a single 3 and just use a single 3" as a tip.

As for the tial shaft I had to shorten the front part of my shaft by 15mm & modify my rear as well. I am running a T5 & VL Turbo LSD.

    cheers

hey how did you go with the exhaust? i have a standard exhaust on mine and it sounds too quiet, was thinking of just putting a straight through single 2 1/2 in on it... atm its a single 2 1/3 with a muffler

No I did say TWIN 1 3/4 even twin 2" into single & back to twin. flow wise a propper twin 1 3/4 will do better then a single 3" whilst keeping the note quieter with mufflers on each pipe.
As for the clutch fan get rid of it then an put electrics on it.

    cheers
