VX SS (Original owner).
After a bit of advice, my nephew is buying a 2007 WM Caprice with the 3.6 Alloytec engine, I have been reading all the threads on here and really can't find what I am after for him. He asked me what years did they have problems with the timing chain on the Alloytec engine and was it sorted out by 2007.
Is there a break point where it was fixed in production? Or is it still an issue?

When it comes to the Alloytec, I'd ALWAYS recommend stretching to something that's SIDI powered.

^High k's for an 08 model?

Anyway. It was up until April/June 07 i think. Then they brought in a revised chain.

Can anyone shed some light on this timing chain issue for those that don't know what it is?

What happens, why does it happen and how is it fixed?

It stretches over time.

It's fixed by replacing it (which is EXPENSIVE as it's a massive job).

If you don't know what it is, or what the issue is, or why it is a big job... then no... no you probably can't fix it yourself.

It's a massive job because of it's location due to what parts of the engine it connects to. You really should get it done professionally.

Is it something which can be fixed by yourself? Why is it a massive job?

from some reports, people are getting a updated software to fix it rather then getting the chains replaced
