    Default Solved Exhaust Drone

Can't understand why I didn't think of it sooner. I have laid an old bedspread in the boot and it has reduced the exhaust drone considerably.

i believe the stock rear mufflers produce a drone in the rear at a particular rpm and speed range, in the v8's

the plastic spare tyre carrier dosnt help the situation

wow, i would go for a better zorst with better quallity mufflers, I have a 3inch, super super high flow cat, and a staight throught 3 inch muffler at the back where the resonator should be. No drone here, but that might be from the turbo.

yeah, turbo's are pretty good at drowning out exhaust noise, but a mattress is cheaper HAHA j/p

Where do people get mattress from bedspread?

The noise has been lessened by insulation, you haven't solved the problem of the drone.

The wrong exhaust on an alloytec equals drone.

I put a bedspread in the boot, not a mattress. I have a stock V6, no turbo, no doof doof exhaust, the car is original in every respect. Compared to my old VZ I just find there is a low "drone" noise entering the cabin, which I (unqualified assessment) have put down to an exhaust noise. I threw an old chenille bedspread into the boot to see if I could absorb the noise and it seems to have worked. I just thought I would share it with others.

You haven't changed the exhaust in any way at all?

No, and I only have done 8K since new. I was thinking the (different) noise was because of twin exhaust in the VE Calais compared to the single in the VZ.

The V8's (stock) don't drone either. Well, mine doesn't anyway...

Given the nature of factory exhausts it seems unlikely. Given he's solved it by insulating the boot, I'd be looking at the diff, an exhaust leak, or just plain old road noise.

Mine are droning like a bastard at the moment... Dont know why either? Only that ever since Holden removed my exhaust to replace the auto trans in April, the car has been droning ever since. They say they have re tentioned it and even removed and re added to the car. No change...
I have to go back to Holden again for them to compare it to another VE V8 sedan.

One thing is for sure that it never dronned like this before the gearbox was replaced and the exhaust removed. It doesnt look like its touching or rubbing on anything but who know! I just wish I could get some help with it as Im hating it every time I go out and drive it.

Is it possible they forgot a gasket, or didn't tighten something properly? Surely if it's the same system it shouldn't be droning after a removal and re-fit???

May be the drone is caused by the exhaust tip?... too light which will resonate more than the V8. Same problem with the VZ, too much drone so they put a big blob (dampner) on the end of the exhaust.

Heh, well, whatta ya know, it disintegrated."

You would think so... It seems worst when its cold for the first 5 or ten mins of driving. But driving around town its so dronney... Also when crusing on the HWY at 110kph, it is droning its head off... It was never this bad.

I read through the Holden invoices you get when they work on your car and read they replaced the cat gasket and bolts. Also n/s side manafold bolt replaced? I wonder if this work as somehow created an issue???

If it is worse when it is cold it sounds like you have a leak. Take it to an exhaust shop to get checked.

agreed, but i'd be taking it to the shop that did the service and let 'em know it's their problem.. Also, although unlikely, the replaced bolt may need to be re-tightened...

Yes well the car is going back into Holden in a coupe of weeks. Im going to get them to check the entire system and even compare it to another VE V8 sedan that has had no modifications to shows them the difference. They cant be telling me its normal for it to drone like this... It never did it before,
