I'm going to be getting a Series 2 Sportswagon for work in a couple of months. Its going to pretty much be the most standard model that you can get so I was just trying to find out what kind of things I could add to it without effecting the car too much (that I can remove once I give the car back)
I've seen on the Holden web site, you can get a GPS built into the screen (for a cost of about $1000), and a reversing camera can also be added for several hundred, but I can't get any of these extras as its a lease car and they get the standard features as I mentioned above.
This is mainly what my questions are based around... with the factory GPS. Do they use a different screen and install an antenna etc?
If its the same screen used, is it possible to get software elsewhere for the GPS?
For the reversing camera.... Are all the cables and connections there (All the way from the screen to the back of the car), therefore I might be able to connect up a camera without any major mods?
I've seen things in EBAY that fit into the Holden Cruze (I know they are made in a different country are and from Daewoo), you can replace the whole screen with another one with that has GPS, DVD player, TV etc Is there anything like that available for the Commodores?
Thanks
Firstly, you are in wrong section.... this is for ASR queries, not general electrical.
I cant answer all of your questions, but I can say that the reversing camera wiring is only put in at build stage on cars ordered with reversing camera. Definitely not a dealer fitted option, which means it's not easy to install and certainly doesnt have wiring in built for everyone to use.
When I got my car, I can remember them stating this fact as I had to get a car later on in the production queue so they could install it, as the earlier car in the right colour was already too advanced in construction. You should be able to get an aftermarket option and wire it up yourself though.... just dont expect it to be exactly like the genuine article.
My understanding is that the GPS is not built into the Holden IQ unit itself, but is a separate module that can be added, and uses the IQ unit as an interface/display. Aftermarket options would probably have compatibility issues. I'm guessing maybe the dealer could install it post-delivery for you, if you want it badly enough to part with the cash yourself.
Just picked up the car today....
While they were going through all the options in the car, I asked them about the GPS. The sales rep said that the GPS can't be added/enabled after its left the factory... thats pretty crappy....
I'd do some more checkin on thar statement. I'm pretty certain it can be enhanced to config the GPS. As for reversing cam, that remains a luxury factory order job and you pay a high price for it.
Its a handy feature but not essential IMO.
As for replacing the whole IQ unit with something else... good-luck. Aftermarket stereo units are becoming obsolute unless the companies specifically design their units to exactly replace the factory units. The factory system isn't too bad but its no Mike Lenman...
Congrats on the new wheels. I'm sure you will be happy.
