Ive put a 2 1/2 inch exhaust system on my VE SS. When the AFM cuts in it gets too noisy and a small vibration . Im thinking of getting the AFM deactivated , but does anyone know how much extra fuel it would use . Im doing 160 k's each day on a freeway.
all depends on your right foot if you spend a lot of time on the freway you will notice the diffence but do you want to put up with the noise on the freeway
please adjust the settings on your sarcasim detector it will be needed

Yes I know, if you get anymore manly you are in danger of making yourself pregnant!
if you get a tune and deactivate the afm ur fuel economy will improve significantly
I'm more worried about your vibration and noise on the highway when your AFM cuts in. Doesn't happen in my twenty ten wagon but I have masked the noise with Dynamat. Get your exhaust system checked.
Postings on other threads suggest the AFM is a sham to make V8's look 'greener' in the eyes of new holden buyers. If re-tuning and deactivating the AFM improves economy and your right foot doesn't need to touch the firewall at every green light then I'd be doing the same.
The problem with that theory of more power less accelerator is when you've got that extra power you tend to use it.

Drive it for a week in sport mode, AFM dont work then and then you will be able to see if there is a difference, I'd near on bet you wont see much of a difference. think they say AFM is good for about 1L/100 khs better so you might use about 5L/week more
I do 50/50 city highways khs, 110 each day, i have a tune done and i went from 12.5L/100khs down to 10L/100khs, used to have to fill up after 4th trip now i can do a full week on 1 tank.
I have the standard exhaust and I get a slight driveline vibration when the AFM is operating. The AFM must change the engine balance slightly when dragging around the unused pots. Does the AFM hold open exhaust valves or something??
The vibration is non-existant when in 8 cylinder mode. I too would like to know if the AFM could be deactivated so I could compare fuel usage for my normal driving conditions.
It would be nice to have a switch!! Maybe there is a fuse or CB somewhere...

Yes SSVRedline ... The vibration was there befor the exhaust was put on . Only very slight . Everyone tryed telling me it was a tyre problem . After I put the exhaust on it came out in noise as well . Took it to Holden and found out it was the AFM . They said all of them do it ,but Im one of about 10 percent of people that picked the vibration was there . Because a V8 cant run smoothly on 4 cylenders .
Hi Cruzer . I fitted a 2 1/2 inch XForce system . Only took 40 minutes to put it on and a bit to line up both the tips . Sounds good . Just sounds like its farting with the AFM.
Thanks heaps everyone for your respons . Ive been doing the drive in manual mode . It sounds heaps better . And no vibration . Not much more fuel . So going to go ahead and get it deactivated with a tune .
Thanks again . excopss.
i know you've already decided, but this is why I think AFM is more than a little useless.
AFM only kicks in when you are at speed on a hwy (not during stop start city driving). but the modern 8's are actually very efficient when it comes to hwy cycle... i know because I have a small 6 and when I look at 8's fuel use it isnt much difference at all. the problem with 8's is when they are in traffic stop start. now.... if they could somehow develop an AFM that runs in stop start traffic, THAT would be worth having. but for hwy use only? disable it. more trouble than its worth. my 2c anyway.
I have a 2011 redline ute auto with afm, I got the whole afm taken out when i put a cam in it, why buy a v8 only to get it to run on 4 cyl, so no i have a L98 instead of an L77. Had other mods and it drives great. Marranos at Croydon done it, Thanks Sonny
Yer, mine does the same. Any light constant throttle condition and in she kicks.
As mentioned earlier, the AFM does cause a little vibes most noticeably around 100-110 K's.
I drive in mostly stop/start Sydney crap traffic. My last tank got me 515 K's for 63 litres. That equates to 12.23 litres per 100 K's. That's about the same as an ecotec V6 and much better than my Bro's Kluger which uses 14.8 per 100 k's on a good tank.
Who in Sydney (South) knows what they are doing with these tuning make-overs? Any experience?

well cutting in and out isnt exactly going to give you much benefit bud. what i was trying to say is that AFM will only really benefit if you sit at a constant speed.... and driving around town is NEVER going to be constant. i say "hwy" but I pretty much mean any long stretch of road with no traffic lights or traffic. speed isn't the factor, its the stretch of road. and if you are in a 40km zone, you arent staying at that speed for very long without having to brake or accelerate.
Lol, I went into Holden today to ask if they could disable it. Spoke to 4 different people they all looked at me blankly, one even asked what afm was... Thats when I walked out...
