Hey guys
I'm fairly new to this forum and had a search regarding the oils but I could not find anything very helpful to me.
I have ve series 2 ute and I'm approaching 7500km and I want to change the oil and oil filter.
I'm fairly handy with cars and I will be doing the service myself. But for all the other major services such as 15000km I will be taking it to the dealer.
I plan on using castrol Edge sport 5w-30 and would just like to hear your opinions on what oils you use in your car.
I have a sv6 sidi.
Thanks in advance
I use Royal Purple oil and filters.

Yes I know, if you get anymore manly you are in danger of making yourself pregnant!
Hey mate, As said above royal purple seems to be the top stuff, I myself use Mobil 1 and its always smooth running etc, as for filter i would stick to genuine while its still in warranty, The Castrol is prob no worries at all depending on what your budget is, but as your suggesting, change it often ie every 7500 between services or 10000 at the most.
IF YOU BUILD IT THEY WILL COME.... STILL WAITING LOL
I have Mobil 1 in there at the moment - not a fan though.. I've noticed my car runs quite rough with it, for whatever reason. Will be changing to Anglomoil soon. Same grade and class of oil as Royal Purple, but it's Australian. Nice.
I'm still rocking the genuine filters since it's in warranty (for a bit). Nothing wrong with genuine filters though, to be honest.
Genuine rule of thumb is the same as for tyres - buy the best you can afford.
RP, Motul, Amsoil, Anglomoil, Mobil 1, etc are all grade 4 synthetics, or true synthetics, where as castrol edge, havoline, and other similarly priced 'synthetics' are actually more similar to semi-synth oils, but are more refined and generally have additives to help with flow and stability, so the properties of the oil are more in line with the full synth oils, and they're allowed to be labelled as such, though they aren't a true synth.
Liquimoly is a great example of a grade 3 synth - performs right up there with a lot of grade 4s but is around 60 bucks a bottle instead of ~$90. Cheaper way to do it is to buy oil by the drum, but that's not suitable for everyone.
I used the Castrol edge 5w-30 for my 15000k service, very good oil...had no issues with noises etc & the engine felt alot better all round. When the cam went in my mechanic used Oleon 10w-60, but i'm gonna do an oil change & use Castrol edge again or go Mainlube as im not really happy with the Oleon oil.
Castrol 10w60 edge at the moment which is a grade 4 synthetic im pretty sure.

I use royal purple, I was told by a walkinshaw workshop never to use Mobil 1...
Tinny,
What grade (Viscos) of M1 are you using?
Had a look at the Anglomoil website, which one were you thinking of using. the 5w30 fully synth or 10w40?
For me at the moment I am just using Fuchs 10w30 premium semi syn oil while the engine runs in. I am thinking I might go back to full syn as I think the engine oil temp is a little high (around 106-7 degrees after and hours driving). Anyone with a 2009/10 SSV tell me what oil temp readings you get when driving for over and hour? Would be good to compair...
Cheers
Phil
I have the 5w30 M1 in there at the moment. It has calmed down a bit and isn't horrible - but I just think it's not as smooth as it was prior. Not sledging M1 in any sense, just saying that my car doesn't seem to like it.
I'll be going with the 5w30 Anglomoil. being a group IV synth, it's molecularly dense enough to protect properly, while still being thin enough to be able to flow quickly. Personally, I don't see any reason to deviate from factory specs, provided you're using a good enough oil.
anyone used the 0w40 castrol?
I use Castrol edge 5w-30 every 5,000k,oh and i have just hit the 60,000km mark not to bad for an "06'' SS
5w-30 Shell Helix ultra
used helix oils for years and can't say anything negative about it !
Would love someone to explain how an oil (of the correct weight) can make their car 'run rough'. . .
It can't......load of BS
It's all in the head
sweet.... so then you'd be happy to put any old no name crap into your car from supercheap or something? because I wouldnt.
hell of a lot more to oil than just the sticker on the front giving it's grade mate.
and no, i'm no Mobil 1 fanboi or anything like that... but brand most certainly makes a difference- for me its either Royal Purple or Penrite.
i'm happy for the daily driver to get Caltex though. good enough for dealer good enough for me.
same thing with fuel.... I noticed a difference when using different brands of higher octane pump fuel. BP is best by a country mile.
Mind you that was in a car tuned to run on the good stuff, but still... there is a difference.
ELF Excelluim GP 10w-50W and still using the good old GMH filter.
Can't complain, runs well.
Front wheel drive cars are the work of the Devil.
Valvoline Synpower 5W40
7000k's and still golden.
Oh dear.. Nobody said I'd be happy to put any no name rubbish in my car. The assumption is that we're talking about common well know manufacturers of engine oils. Engine oil willnot make your car run rough. Worst case scenario is that an oil that is a lot thicker than what your car requires will make your engine feel lazy and not as responsive. That's all. We're talking big manufacturers here. Without chemical analysis of engine oil these days you'd struggle to notice any significant differences between comparative oils from different manufacturers
At the end of the day majority of oils in oz are not API certified so manufacturers specs are more or less unreliable. It could be load of bs and no monitoring body exist here to keep an eye on it. On the royal purple..... It's based on same base stock as many other synth oils on the market. None of them are truly lab made synth oils. It's just their additive package that legally makes it ok to be refered as synth oil. Just marketing bs and inflated price gets people sucked in to pay big bucks for group 3 basestock oil when other stuff on the market is far better value for your money
Ps. Rp commercial stuff is still group 3 hydrocracked oil
So can you fill us in on what is the best value for money group 3 that you can pick up at the local Repco and Supercheap ?
Which site are you using to say if an oil is group 2,3,4 ... ie what is Synpower ?
I always use penrite, sin 0 in the VE, HPR15 in the VR. Been using only penrite in my cars for about 15 years.
Was a valvoline fan prior to that with the Torana!
I can't even remember what i used to use in the torana, maybe the shell oil in the yellow bottle.
