    Default Electronic rust protection

    Hey guys
I have a series 2 ute and when I got it I had alot of water damage to the interior which all got replaced under warranty. The water was coming into the cabin from a body seal behind the drivers seat above the jack.
Anyway ever since I had the leak I have always been worried about my car rusting and would just like to get your thoughts on electronic rust prevention units.
I have also been thinking about extending the two drainage tubes that are at the at the end of the cabin under the rear window. I was thinking that I could extend the tubes so that they pass the drain holes under the rear of the car so there would be no water touching the body of the car. Do you think it would be safe to do so?
I have attached a picture of what the tray looks like without the plastic tub liner.
    Thanks in advance

Years ago these electronic rust prevention devices were supposed to be the bees knees. Then I recall seeing a review done on them and they concluded that these basically were useless - even the screws holding the units to the car body were rusting!!

Short answer - forget this electronic anti rust crap and save your money. The way the bodies are dip-primed etc. these days and the quality of the local steel means that rust is pretty much a thing of the past. Just make sure you dry out your interior properly and she'll be fine.

a bloke on the ls1 forums extended the hoses to drain underneath the car as his was going in to the tray, on mine whenever it rains/washed on the back window water always comes from under the ute near the back wheels.

all VE utes have those bodgy drain hoses, the amount of muck that gets washed down into the sills is bad as i found out. ive done the drain mod to my ute, what you need is as follows; the black poly hose on the ute is 18mm in diameter, go to bunnings etc.. and get some clear pvc hose-20mm x 1mt, 2 of those, and 2 hose clamps. i threaded the pvc hose all the way up the poly hose than ran it down to the front of the rear wheel arches. there is a blank grommit down there that i simply put a star cut in then forced the hose thru then re-attached the grommit. you will have to trim the hose by about 4'' from memory. there is a false cavity there between the wheel arch and the grommit so you only poke the hose thru about 1-2 inches then put the liner back in, job done. plenty of room for the hose mod so dont worry. as for the electronic rust converter, never seen one yet that works. hope this helps

I've got a mate that bought a new VZ five years ago . He got the electronic rust thing put on when he bought the car . Nearly every stone chip has started rusting . The screws holding the unit in are rusting and numerous other rust spots starting to appear . Compaired to my old car with no rust protection , I'd stay clear of them .

no worries mate however you will have to cut the grommits as they are a blank and you need them for a snug fit you will see what i mean when you take them out, heres some pics, one of them you can see the dirt in the sill i was talking about

I just did a trip to Fraser Island and asked a tag-along tour guide why none of their toop carriers had electronic rust protection on them and he said it wasnt worth it. The units rust out before the car and if you wanted full car protection you would need about 6000 points throughout the car to keep it in good order..

Thanks mate. I see what your saying about all that dirt buildup. As for the hole in the grommet, could I rather drill a 20mm hole into it rather than having the star cut?

I don't see why not. i'd just be mindful of not chewing the grommet up if you use a holesaw. I cut mine because it was easier and a snug fit, probably the safer way to do it too.when I say star cut I just put 2 slit cuts in the centre-1 horizontal,1 vertical so to speak.
