    Default Smokey VE V8 Exhust

hey guys. just over 3 weeks ago i bought a 06 ve ss with a full exhust system upgrade. when i test drove the car the salesman noticed alot of black smoke coming from the exhust. the dealership spent $1300 to rewrite computer system in it to fix the problem.
even after trying premium fuel i am still smelling a fairly strong smokey smell but there is no visible smoke. is it normal for a moded car and exhust system to do this or should i go to the dealership and get them to do something aboutit even after they spent $1300 on it already.

And there is also a slight noise it seems like coming from one or all of the injectors or could it be the valves. i cant tell. Again is it normal.

im very new to the V8 scene. please any comment will help

This doesn't sound good at all...
    What's been modified?
Does it have the factory cats?
Basically, it shouldn't smoke, stink or make noises as you describe.

dont know many details about the car just yet. havent hade the chance to get under the car to look at the exhust as yet. just by looking at it i know it has 4 into 1 headers and the rest im asuming has been replaced because it has 3" tips. not modified alot. i know it been to a performance dyno shop befor i bought it coz the computers were coded and no one could get in to it.
the black ashy smoke was only when the salesman was 'showing off' the car and it painted the red commodore behind it black. nowhere near that bad now after they spent a few days on it. basically just the fumes. is it worth taking it back to the dealer again

And the noise coming from the motor, i dunno i might just be paranoid.

if it has non std cats eg; ballistic style cats then a burnt fuel smell is normal as they are basicly a pretend cat as they have large cells (holes) in other words they av 100-200 cpi (cells per inch) where as a standard cat is around 350 cpi therefore the smell will be very noticeable but no smoke. it must have been running very rich before the caryard fiddled with the tune. i would be hot footing it to your nearest tuning shop though and have them go over the tune properly.
im out of my mind at the moment...please leave a message

thanks bladerunner, but thats not what i wanted to hear, that means another trip to the bloody dealership. how can i tell if the cats are standard. are you saying that if the cats are not standard that i can expect to have a little smoke and fumes.

This is certainly not the case with mine. If i were you i'd be getting it in to your tuner pronto.

I would say it had been tuned and the black smoke is just fuel. If you drove the car before and after the dealership played with the PCM I reckon you would notice a definite decline in performance. Take it to an aftermarket tuner to get it done again, as the dealership would only have reset it back to factory specs.

to clear things up a bit, the dealership did not do anything to the car. i had to take it there coz it was still under warranty, the dealer then sent the car to a aftermarket tuner and fixed it up. and i dont think they put a stanard tune in it coz the dealer paid $1300 to the tuner so im guessing its something a little better.

the car does not smoke anymore since its been to the tuner. but it does still get a strong burnt fuel smell to it.

got the car up on my mates hoist today to check out the exhust. its a x-force 2.5 inch mild steel set up with 1 5/8 inch 4 into 1 headers and hi flow cats.
sound great. dont need anything bigger.

My X-Force exhaust had a really wierd smell to it for the first 2-3 weeks but everyone I asked said this was normal for a new exhaust so I left it and it doesnt smell anymore... Not heaps helpful I know but it should go away soon... Im not sure about this black rubbish coming out though - I never had that so keep hassling them incase there is something wrong...

Let me know how you go

    Cheers
