Hi there,
I have purchased a 2008 VE Calais (base) which has one issue - the screen on the stereo looks to me like it's been cleaned with some sort of solvent that shouldn't have been used (see attached image).
The display itself works fine, just a bit hard to read at times (mostly in direct sunlight) because of the screen's cover.
I have been unable to improve things by cleaning it with an LCD screen cleaner.
Does anyone know whether it might be a simple case of getting the front fascia removed and replacing the cover for the screen, or is there more to it than that?
G'day,
FYI, the LCD screen itself is soldered direct to the fascia's circuit board (and isn't a separate part - as far as I know). The plastic with the buttons etc on it is mounted in front. You [I]could[I] replace the entire fascia but that would cost money. Have you tried methylated spirits? I can't tell from the photo if the smearing effect is because of something on top of the screen or if something has effectively stripped the coating off. FWIW, having a go with a cotton bud in one corner would probably be worth a shot to see if you can dissolve the gunk - if that's what it is. If it's stripped off a layer of something, that's gonna be much harder. You could try Armour-all at a pinch but that's getting desperate...
You could try a LCD screen cleaner from a electronics store as any thing else could scratch or melt the screen more (isopropyl alcohol is bad juju)
I wonder if you can just use a cleaning solution to atleast blend it and make it uniform. Ie scrub the whole screen completely.
I think there would be another way to fix it however and im only taking a punt at this.
With people that scratch windows and totally trash them, you can get a plastic film that sits over it and it has a liquid smeared between the glass and film. It totally makes the scratches invisible.
So failing any other method maybe try going to a window installer and ask them re the plastic film.
Had a similar problem with the perspex covering the speedo on my daughters car - it had been sprayed with Leather cleaner (why there was leather cleaner in a Mitsubishi Mirage is beyond me!!) and "misted" it.
I used Meguiars PlastX polish - a bit of elbow grease and it now looks like new

Maybe try getting a screen protector for an iPad and cutting to size (try the cheapest you can get first) this may make easier to read. Be very careful cleaning any touch screens with any type of cleaner as it can damage the touch part further and rend it inoperable. I killed my daughters Nintendo DS this way (well she did it but after I said to clean it with an isopropyl lense cleaner :/) after a failed screen protector application.
