    Default WM DVD player issue

    Hi all,

More often than not, the sound from the DVD player in my WM Caprice doesn't come thru the normal speakers when playing in non headphone mode. About half of the time, it is silent, the other half, the sound only comes out of the left channel.

I've reset the system a number fo times (by pulling the fuse inn the boot).

The car is now out af warranty.... :-)

    Does anyone have anyideas?

    thanks
    Russell

Try disconnecting the main plug to the CD/Radio HVAC box which sits behind the front facia (leave disconnected for 15mins). From memory you'll need to pull the drivers side plastic pannels off to gain access. Its not a big job...

When you restart the system you may get a security lockout message on screen. don't worry it should cycle through and pick up the security code from the BCM. Just turn the ignition off and restart. Had this happen to mine while fitting a new SIC module.

No go HEXEM. I disconnected the main plug and removed the fuse (in the booot). Left it all for 30 mins, but still no sound from the right hand channel.

You mentioned in the other post about checking the aux in. Is this seperate to the main harness?

Yeah there are RCA leads going from the dvd unit (assuming its the factory one in the glovebox) running to the back of the HVAC box (the one with the big plug you took out).

There's a couple of other things you can try.

    1. Remove the facia - to do this grab the bottom of the facia from underneath and pull firmly towards you. This will unplug the facia unit. Then simply replace by pushing it back on.
    2. Go into audio options and check that the balance/fade controls are set correctly.... -- Maybe try that one first, but I am asuming you've done this already.

Mine's a series one Caprice, so it has the factory DVD in the roof in the rear, and factory GPS in the glovebox.

Just checked and I couldn't see any other plugs going into the HVAC. It's a bit tight, so I'm not sure that I could see everything though.

There are two plugs on the drivers side; the main large plug and a smaller one above it. Originally, I just pulled the larger main plug, with no result. I just pulled the other plug too, and I got the security message that you mentioned.

I've now unplugged both and will wait 30 odd minutes and see what happens....

hmm, ok fair enough.. Roof mounted DVD... Might be a little more difficult to fix without removing the unit... See how you go.

Yep, first thingthat I checked was the balance. There's no sound when you mvoe to the right hand channel.

I'll go and try the facia now.

ummm, how do you get the facia off in a WM? There doesn't appear to be anywhere that you can grab it.

umm, should be the same as whats in a Calais, SSV? You grap the bottom part of the facia and pull firmly towards you. I'll see if its the same as mine...

    Finally tracked down the problem.

The plug in the unit in the roof wasn't fully plugged in. It takes a fair bit of effort to get the plug to click in.

However, the drivers side head screen has now stopped working. (It was working two days ago) :-( And we're just about to drive to Queensland in two weeks time. The young bloke's not happy.

Would anyone have any ideas on how to troubleshoot/fix this one?

    hi rjp,

sorry i cannot offer any help, but man i bought a calais v with the rear roof dvd and my screen wont turn on, not blaupunkt sign or anything, i think its the plug aswell but how do i re plug it in ive looked all around the screen all the wiring seems to be internal,

any help will be much apprecaited because the dvd plays through the front screen fine so i think its just a connection in the back screen!

    Hi Clock,

The screens in my Caprice are in the head rests. I believe that your have one screen in the roof mounted DVD player itself.

They are slightly different in appearance.

To get to the plug, I gently pulled down on the surround around the DVD slot. It's firm, but it will come awy. This exposed the plug to the DVD unit itself. I then pushed the plugs together firmly. This may help yours.

Also, my system has the ability to turn the rear screens on and off. Not sure if yours does too. Might be something to check.

Rang the local dealer up today to ask for a price on a replacement screen. $1200 wtf!!!

Yep, that's only for the screen.

So I'd though that I'd check the current one to make sure that it actually is dead before I do anything by swapping the two screens over.

Problem is that I can't get the bottom of the surround to come off on the back of the head rests.

I've tried givig it a bloody hard reef, but it won't budge.

    Any ideas anyone?

$1200 you should have said "I'm not after a 60" version"

Before I got my car I was looking at a 2003 7 series BMW. Other then the servicing the other issue is with the electronics. Any cars with electronics like the Caprice and to the less extent the Calais can be a pain if they have issues. Buy your kid an Ipad and be done with it !

Managed to get the screens out. You dont take the facia off, you pull it forward and out of the way so that you can unscrew the four screws that hold the screen in. Then all you need to do is twist it so that it comes out. Simple really....

Swaped the two sides over and confirmed that the drivers screen is rooted. Curiously, when I had the passenger side screen in the drivers side, a security error came up on the screen. The same one that came up when the dealer had a look at the system early last year and swore that they didn't touch anything...

The young bloke's going to us his Ipad on the trip to Queensland....

I'm after one too - same problem as rjp. If you have more than one available, I'm interested.

By the way, I found out that since the screens are manufactured by Blaupunkt, they offer a changeover service with a 12 month warranty on the exchange unit. Trouble is, they want $800 for their trouble!

I also noticed that although the passenger side screen has the "aux in" inputs and the drivers side one doesn't, I think the screens themseves are identical. The aux in is from a separate board that plugs into the screen. In other words, if you had a dud passenger side screen and you could only get a drivers side screen, it should work OK.
