Default Series 1 or Series 2?

In the market for an upgrade from my aging VT.

I have had my eye on the series 2 since it's release, but think $36k+ is a lot of dosh. I'd just like opinions on whether the value is in the money difference between the 2.

I 100% would love an SIDI Alloytech, so it seems it's between a Series 2 sv6, and a much cheaper MY09 (correct me if I'm wrong) Series 1.

I find it hard to go past the Series 2 simply for the IQ system, and subtle changes to the exterior. But, as I mentioned earlier, it would seem a good $10k+ separates them.

the series 2 sidi does not make any more power than the series 1 sidi ... get your facts right ...
Also i think that the series 1 looks externally better ... but you are right that the iq is hard to go past ... i have a my10 sidi built 06/10 and i was very annoyed when i found out that had i waited another couple of months i would have been able to pick up one with the iq system ... its just annoying

ALWAYS series 2 main reason is that the problems from the series 1 are fixed and makes for a better car, simple rule buy the best get the best. Hope that helped.

OK, so it really doesn't take much to sway me towards a Series 2.

Performance wise, can you guys tell me how different, if at all, they are.

That is the dilemma I have though.

Basically, the Series 2 needs to justify the extra cash. I'm asking for opinions on if it does, or not, do that.

Thinking I'll go the Series 2, as if I buy a Series 1, I'll forever be disappointed...

Im new to owning commodores, this is my first one.

I would never have considered buying a series 1 purely because I found the interior boring (air vents, aircon controls, stereo). The series 2 IQ system (plus round airvents in my sv6) did it for me to warrant the purchase :P

Same here. Like 316, I chose a series 2 purely based on better looking interior, IQ system, reverse sensors + camera and knowing in the back of my mind that known problems with series 1 have been corrected. However, with the price that you pay for on a series 2 sv6...only time I would go back to a series 1 is when I consider purchasing a SS! If you are looking for comfort + cool gadgets + a bit of power go for the series 2 sv6...if you are looking for raw power + comfort + aggressive exterior look go for the series 1 SS !

Just keep in mind... the spare $10k you save can straight away go into mods into your series 1 SIDI. The engines are the same, really just a different bodykit and interior. If interior is that important $10k would go along way

By the time SIDI was introduced they had most of the bugs out of the VE's. I'd go for a seriesII myself but it also depends on how much money you have available.

    Hmm, some interesting views.

I'm also more inclined to go the brand newy as I made the mistake of getting an older car, and evidently have run into quite few troubles with it in the 3 years I've had it. The latest being a stuffed clock spring in the driver air bag, and a possible crank angle sensor too.

Mid corner, she just shut down, and I lost power steering. Lucky I was turning into my driveway with my neighbours one right next to it, and I coasted into theirs Lol. I've lost total confidence in it, and is sitting in garage. Battery drained real quick, and long story short, I somehow got myself locked out of it tonight Lol. All good now though.

Back on topic, I'm almost dead set on the series 2, probably a used one, priced in the low $30's. Will upgrade a couple of things myself I guess. Dunno what though.

I'd seriously consider a good low K Commodore International. Sidi, leather, 18 inch alloys.
Don't know how the prices compare to a series 2.
Remember you can now buy VE's starting from about 10 grand so there's planty of scope, and a few real bargains out there. You're right about the newer the better - just as long as its not being sold off cos it's a lemon.

Yeah, I'm not real into the International. Kind of feels like a Berlina/cheap Calais.

find a series 1, and spend $10k on it making it better than a stock series 2 that will only need mods anyway.

i can understand the argument of getting a newer model to avoid the 'gremlins' of previous ones... but that arguement really only stands up on new body shapes. series 2 is an update- not a new one entirely.
if you can save $10k, that's an aweful lot of money for virtually the same car.
seriously, what's the drawcard for the series 2? its a marketing tactic. minor changes does NOT equal thousands of dollars.
mechanically, they are exactly the same car.

buy an sv6 so you get the body kit.

$500-600 to lower it (stuff the FE2 crap)
    $2500 for 20" wheels/tyres.
$2500 for an audio upgrade done right (but not too extreme).
    $400 on quality tint.

what's that, $6k? and still $4k to go..... jeez, umm.... ok, full exhaust, intake, tune.... there's another $2k.
$2k left for other pleasures. there's a lot of nice things you can put in your house for $2k.

btw, you paying cash or getting a loan?
if a loan, what's the interest payable over the loan term? there's another $1000 easy on the extra $10k you are spending.
for what, so you can say to yourself in the mirror, "I own a series 2".
    big deal.
if it was a couple of grand, fine. but if you can save $10k, to me its a no brainer.

I agree. I have never bought a new car because I could never justidfy the $X over a one or two year old version of the same car.

I test drove a 'new' series I and was disappointed. i then sat(didn't even drive) in 3 Series II's and was very impressed and was much impressed when I finally drove one (i.e. mine)

IMO the Series 2 styling kicks over the Series 1 (biased much!) plus the IQ is a great little thing to have over the stock Series 1 system (SV6 to SV6)

If funds allow, then go the S2.
Personally I would dodge the 3.0 engine as its torqueless at low RPM. The 3.6 is much nicer to drive.

I've seen some impressive SV6 S2 prices getting around. I sold my VT for 6.5K which was surprising not to mention helpful with the outlay for the new wheels.

Hmmm... I dont know about 'torqueless'.
I got the 3L and I'm very happy with it.
Same arguement could be made with 6's in general, "get an 8... 6's are torqueless".

Go test drive some OP. To be honest I love the 3L, 4cyl fuel economy, big size car. Plus there's considerable money to be saved for that .6L.

I like the IQ concept but I think the S1 looks better than the S2 on the outside. After spending a day driving mine with the MACE tune in it then I'd say buy an S1 (3.6ltr SIDI) throw in a 3.7 diff, cai, extractors/system then tune for $3-4grand and then grin ya head off . It's sharp as and I have no complaints with a lack of torque.

having had a series 1 alloytec and now a series 2 sidi, i would go the series 2, as the alloytec is noisy and the series 2 sidi is far better in power and response and seems to have better fitting/alligned plastics around the dash area.
