Default Black Badging for my SSV

    Hey Guys,

So after reading rusty411's post on spraying his lion badge black, I decided to give it a go. I went the step further of removing my E85 & Lion badges off the back & the series 2 badges off the side to do them black also.

I did it pretty much the same as rusty411 did his front lion, only the removal of the other badges was a bit more involved & require a bit of time & patience. I won't go into detail about the actual sanding/priming/painting of the badges as rusty411's post handles it quite well.

To remove the badges secured with the adhesive double sided tape you will need.

    a) Glaziers gloves
    b) A thin guitar string or fishing wire
    c) WD40
    d) Rags
    e) Warm soapy water
    f) Painter's tape
    g) A credit card

    1. Removal of the front lion badge.

    Read rusty411's post HERE.

    2. Removal of badges using double adhesive.

I've read a bunch of stuff on how to do this, but here's how I did it. Some guys talk about using fishing wire or dental floss to cut the adhesive behind the badge, I ended up using a .010 gauge guitar string. As to protect my hands I used glaziers gloves, they are really grippy & protect your hands well.

You basically wanna take the string & wrap on lap around each hand to give you some tension, the best way I can describe it is if you were gonna garrotte somebody, that's how you wanna set the string up around your hands. Now be really careful not to make contact with your paint by getting the string around the back of the badge & lightly pulling back towards you. Then moving your hands in a left to right motion you cut through the adhesive like cheese.

Once the badge is off, depending how brave you have been with how close to the paint the string has been you will have a thin layer if you've been brave (maybe a little too brave), or like me a big thick layer of adhesive left behind if you were really careful. The thinner the layer, the easier it's going to be to get it off your paint but the bigger the risk of scratching your paint.

    2. Marking around badges

You wanna tape around each badge as a guide to putting the badges back on when they are dry.

    3. Removing double adhesive tape leftovers

This for me was trial and error. I initially used eucalyptus oil which was okay, but then heard a suggestion to use WD40 which worked a treat. You basically need to give the adhesive a good soaking with the WD40 & scrape it away with a credit card. You do need to exercise a bit of patience as the adhesive is very heavy duty. I suggest giving each area a good spray, leaving for 5 minutes, scrape away at one area & when you can't get any more off without being too rough give it another good spray & move on to the next spot.

After about 30 minutes of this process I was able to completely remove all traces of the double sided adhesive, the paint is in no way scratched or discoloured.

That's pretty much it really. I'm by no means an expert on any of the methods I've used in this project, it's just how I did it & my experience. Any further suggestions would be more than appreciated (in case I have to do this again later.)

I'll be posting pics of the finished result tomorrow (my gloss is still drying).

    Thanks guys.

3M adhesive remover is brilliant stuff for removing tape residue - just a little hard to come by. Good write up mate.

Nice write up mate. Can I offer one piece of advice to go with it. When I'm doing any badge removal, I use my wife's hairdryer and blow hot air direct on the glue. This makes it really soft and easy to work with. You will find that in some cases you may not even have to put any thing in behind it to 'cut' the glue as it may just start to lift when you pull on it.

Personally I would be very careful using guitar wire but if it works for you - go for it. If you use the heat method I'm suggesting, fishing line will be fine.

Yeah I was thinking about that. Do you reckon I should replace it with something else or leave the space blank entirely?

E85 and Sidi badges are not needed at all - just leave them off and keep it clean.

I think you're right, leave a blank space for when I have to apply a "supercharged" badge... lol

Well a supercharged badge will certainly carry a bit more weight than merely advertising the fact it can run on vegetarians!

My car is debadged completely except for the front chrome badge, still deciding on what to do with it.

I used dental floss on my badges, guaranteed not to damage the paint, but because you're pulling away from the car, it tends to cut the adhesive at the back of the badge rather than against the paint.

if you own an SSV then keep the Chrome Badge and add some more. God knows you've paid a pretty penny for the right to have them on yoru car. I am old school so I am a big fan of chrome badges - unless they say hybrid or prius. Those belong on Taxi's.

I certainly don't think the series 2 badging is needed - quite surprised they dumped the 6.0L badging for it, to be honest. The way I see it is - do you raise an eyebrow at the series 2 badging on a VT - how about AUIII badging? Means nothing to me. Bin it.

how did you go with re-attatching them, just but some 3M double sided tape or something and cut it out? or would it just be easier to buy new badges with it already on the back?

There's clear poly trim tape you can get - being plastic, rather than foam, it won't deteriorate or go solid.

But definitely easier to grab a new badge. They're not expensive.
