Since I'm a bit old school and don't like the modern service interval periods which on some brands is upon 20 000 K's between oil changes. That's far too long in my book.
Normally the original oil is mineral based with limited modifiers to allow bed-in. I've got 9K on mine now so I would assume everything is sitting nicely now, so it should be ready for some slippery stuff...
Am I being anal again![]()
VE II SS-V Sportwagon
nah you not being anal. I did mine at it's 3thou service as most blokes do. some guys do it every 5thou. But 10 thou would be the norm. Ignore what the service schedule says.it's just good sense to run fresh clean oil especially in a 6ltr
im out of my mind at the moment...please leave a message
Ditto here as well. Forced the service guy to change the oil at 3000K service. They rang me a second time to make sure I was absolutely certain I wanted the oil changed at 3000K. The 6.0L purs nicely
I would not let it go past over 10 000 under any circumstances !!!
Personally I do my VE every 7500 k's
Depends on how long your planing on keeping your car for, if you plan on keeping your car for three years then hold out as long as you can if you plan keeping the car for a longer period then change it more regularly.
There is no use taking care of a car so the car yard can make a big profit in 3 years time!!!!

Yes I know, if you get anymore manly you are in danger of making yourself pregnant!
Is there any reason between the log book services I couldn't just get genuine filters n oil and change them.. I too didn't like the 15k services but don't want to void the warranty
I think leaving it to the 3000km check up is asking for trouble, let alone 15,000. I'd dump it at 3000 at the lastest, then 7,500, 15,000, and every 7,500 after that like Xonar said.
Depends if you're asking technically, or realistically. Realistically, no there's no issue doing it yourself. Technically, if something screws up and it's found to be as a result of the last oil change, they'll be asking for receipts from a qualified mechanic in order to verify the warranty.
You can't void your warranty by servicing more regularly. Provided there an authorized mechanic
I religiously change all my cars every 10k and run good synthetic oil they're out of warranty so just do it myself.
If you think 15k is bad, BMW recommend every 25k on the e46!
15 000 k's is recommended under IDEAL driving condition !
None of us do IDEAL driving....
Stop and start traffic, towing, dirt, flogging all call for 7500 service interval on a commodore
Small price to pay for keeping your engine in good condition !
i do mine every 7500kms.
Mine was done with less than 500ks (yes 500) on the clock. I used mineral oil, the oil in the car was black when it came out.
I will change to fully synthetic at 7500.

can i just point out that all the ve's since at least my09 have come out with castrol magnatech ... which is fully synthetic i think... but i do agree with changing the oil more regularly than 15000
Magnatech is semi synth
Yep, I agree with all of you. I'll crawl under the beasty this Week-end and dump the 7.8 ltrs.
I should know better as I do hold an automotive engineers licence but I haven't been in the game for about 25 years. However, I do try to keep up with some the of the techo stuff even though there not much repairing anymore, just replacing. I do all my own servicing and have never had warranty claim issues after I produce my licence. Changing your oil and filter between services yourself doesn't have to be made known to your dealer anyway. They would never know if its not recorded and personally I don't think they would care (unless they don't like you).
If I knew what oil was put in from the factory I probably would have left it there until 10K. It still appears very clean and doesn't smell fuelly but I'm assuming its crap quality oil, so it will get dumped this Week-end AIS.
What's the good oil?
VE II SS-V Sportwagon
mate your risking opening a can of worms by asking that! Lol. From the factory they are filled with castrol magnetic 10/30 which isn't a bad oil. I personally would stick with it as I've tried most brands but others might differ but like I said watch out for that can of worms as there's endless opinions on what's the good oil
im out of my mind at the moment...please leave a message
Agreed. You'll get a million different answers from that question. Do a bit of a research and find and oil that you're comfortable with, both in terms of performance and price. I just wouldn't vary greatly from the recommended weight - particularly when new.
I went into the local Holden dealer today, to get the low down on what they actually use when servicing.....What does everybody think about ACDelco 10W/30 oil PN# 92148132? It is a GF-3 rated oil not a GF-4 like the owners manual says should be used. Thoughts?
Personally I would change oil at 3000kms then every 7500kms to keep the 15k services on track.
You can do the intermediate ones yourself just use the genuine filter and correct oil (and amount of oil) and they got no way of telling you did it.
Silver Certified.
Firstly, the ACDelco oil is good stuff. Manufactured by Fuchs Oil fo them. The specific ACDelco oil you quote is the mineral based one. You can get the semi synthetic ACDelco which will be GF-4, or simply buy the Fuchs GTO 10w30 semi synthetic which is the exact same product.
I've been researching oil and according to Holden and GM, all 2011 vehicles are now factory filled with a Dexos 1 or Dexos 2 grade oil which is also a full synthetic. Holden also recommend a Dexos grade oil as service fill, but try talking to their tech line or your local dealer about it and you'll be surprised at how little they know about it. There are heaps of oils in the States which are now Dexos 1 rated. Out in Australia there is only Mobil1 and the ACDelco Dexos product that are licensed to carry the Dexos name. Valvoline are producing a new oil (Valvoline DX1) but good luck in sourcing it. Only comes in 20ltr drums too but at this stage is not licensed to carry the Dexos name....but clearly meets the specs.
And don't our Series 2 L77 motors come over to Aussie from the States as crate motors?? Which means they are filled with a fully synthetic Dexos 1 spec oil??
I've been using Valvoline Oils for years and its easy to get discounted.
I'm going to use Durablend 5 - 40W. Apparently this is GF-4 rated (what ever that is) oil and is a half decent price.
VE II SS-V Sportwagon
did mine @ 3k. Dealer used Magnatech 10-30. I won't be changin @ 7.5K as i'll reach that in 3 months.
I used Mobil 1 for 3 years in my Vy SV8 and never had a problem so I will be using it again in the Ve
I will also be instructing the dealer to change the oil and filter at my 3000k checkup.
If the Mobil 1 was good enough for Brocky it is good enough for my baby!!!
