Hi guys,
Just ordered a new SS Thunder ute, I received a bit of info from one of the people that work at the dealer about getting paint protection for the vehicle. They quoted me on a package which included Paint Protection, Tint and electronic Rust - $1400 with a lifetime warranty.
What's your thoughts on pricing? Would you get the paint protection from the dealer or somewhere else?
Thanks
their paint protection doesn't work, their tint fades... and electronic rust protection... can't see that working myself.
If you take good care of your car, you don't need paint protection...besides, I have actually seen it do the opposite...I used to know someone who bought an AU Falcon many years ago, got paint protection put on it...if anything it actually made the condition of the paint worse.

Of course you need paint protection. Otherwise detailers wouldn't be in business. The problem with dealer paint protection packages is the bullshit that comes with it. If it cost $100 and the Ming Mole was honest as to it's capabilities it wouldn't be a rip off.
To put the pricing in context, for under $400, this is what you could get from one of the best detailers in the country:
* Thorough Hand Wash
* Wheels Detailed & Tyres Dressed
* Non-Abrasive 2 part Chemical and Mechanical decontamination
* Single Stage (1pass) Machine Polish of Jewellers Rouge Ultra Fine (sub 1µm) Ceramic Clear Polish
* Glass Cleaned & Treated
* Paint Sealed nanotech synthetic sealant
Options include:
* Photo Shoot: $90 (raw & print ready, on disk)
* General Interior Clean: $20
* Seal STRONG: $45
* Full Metal Jacket Paint Protection: $95
* Documentation (inc Images): $88
* Leather Feed: $40
* Leather Treatment: $90
And here's the finished product:

Agree with the above - and Final Inspection is one of the best places you can take your vehicle in Melbourne - there are a number of other very good detailers in Melbourne also, so if you're not local to them, then don't be afraid to shop around.
The big draw card that is perceived from the dealer paint protection is the lifetime warranty. Take the time to read the warranty card. Make sure to check the details of what is actually covered by that warranty and ask about ALL the maintenance requirements to keep that warranty in check, which will be at YOUR cost. There are a number of products that have arrived on the market fairly recently that DO actually work - and for years, not months - which essentially require no more than a basic wash with ANY pH neutral shampoo - not necessarily their brand. They will generally be more expensive than the above price list, but for those who have no intention of taking care of their car could be money well spent, considering these products actually cure harder than clear coat.
In the end, the best advice you'll get is to ask around, shop around and look for yourself at the pros and cons of what the dealerships can offer you compared to the aftermarket. Same deal goes with tint. You can save a packet, get the same warranty - and end up with a product that won't lift or fade.
We got after market tint, plus paint protection and leather protection for $525 on a sportwagon with moonroof. Dont use the dealer for that stuff.
well the protection pack i got from dealer sorted me and after 3 years is in as the day i drove it home condition.
it does live in garage and has only done 15000 ks but i dont regret getting the protection pack and besides she was hot and just her titties sold me the package!
Why pay for something like tint when you can get it thrown in for free?
I was always sceptical of paint treatment and never bought it myself. My mate who has been a panel beater for years also warned me off it. My CV8 has had the Permaguard 5000 treatment. The car is 7 years old and looks new. Almost. The previous owner applied it when he bought it from the original owner and the car has some minor chips in the front bumper and bonnet. It is best applied new obviously.
That said I 100% recommend it. Water beads off the finish and it is about 5 years old. I wash it with pure water and a microfiber chamois. There is a special detergent I have that you can use but is rarely necessary. My panel beater mate saw it and is equally impressed. I am not sure the cost but it would be worth it on a new car if you are going to keep it long term.
The only qualifications are that this car has been kept in a garage and has had minimal use. 50,000ks us far.
I got paint protection on my ute.. three years on and its only starting to fade. I've been regulary waxing it anyway but sometimes I go without a good wax for months at a time.
