Default Easy OEM VE Front Dash 12V Socket Install (Alternative to Cigarette Lighter purchase)

Hi guys, ever wanting a spare 12V socket for the VE Commodore in a place that Holden should have placed it - that is - under the audio unit, without having to buy a Holden Ashtray Cigaretter Lighter kit?

I replaced my compartment space with a Pontiac G8 front 12V socket kit (see pic), its a tidy OEM install and is better than the Holden Ashtray kit as it provide the user with extra space to place items as well looks a cleaner install.

The GM part number is 92206136 Compartment.

Im sure you will be able to order from Holden or get one from a pontiac G8 wreck from the states.

Its an easy install and requires removal of the trim surrounding the gear stick and undoing x2 screws to remove the exisiting blank compartment space, and replacing with the G8 12V socket kit. The G8 12V socket requires wiring up to the exisiting spare cigarette lighting wiring which is housed underneath the audio unit, this is accessed by removing the centre compartment driver side panel (see pic) and unclipping the cigarette lighting wiring clip. For some strange reason the clips on each do not mate correctly but to resolve this i just mated the two using spare wire and spade terminals. The spare cigarette lighter clip will have three terminals, pos, neg and lighting for the cigarette lighter ring, the thrid is redundant when using the pontiac 12V socket kit.

As you can see in the pic its a clean install, takes bout 10 mins.

i bought mine off ebay, look under pontiac G8 wrecks, here are photos of the part numbers for the units. they look like they are made from GM here in australia as i believe the pontiac g8s were exported to the USA? try ordering the part number through a dealer.

I just did this today with help from the original poster (cheers mate) - works great. Couple of tips: I removed the plug from the 12v part and crimped on blade connectors and then clipped them on to the cigarette accessory plug that is standard in the VE. Was 3 terminals - on that plug: bottom is positive and I used the top left for the negative as the top right worked but caused interference to the picture from my reversing camera on the screen if the new 12v was used with eg phone charger. Now it is installed 12v socket only works when ignition on but also stays on when key removed for about 20 secs - same time as headlights stay on if u choose egress lighting in your set up options / I'm not a mechanic, I'm a lawyer and I had no problems doing this - took me about an hour as I had to research how to take centre Console out / I worked through the gap where this new part fits - I didn't remove the side trim line the original poster for fear of breaking clips etc when removing so was a bit fiddly but all good

That's the wrong part: don't get the smokers kit: scroll up to original post - get the 12v accessory part

    Default Prices

I bought the front and rear smokers pack from the local Holden dealer a year and a half ago. Cost was $104, so the Ebay price seems steep.

I was pleased to find that the Series 1 kit fitted straight into my Series 2 when I upgraded.

Hi Guys. Just hashing up my own 12v/USB port to hook up to the front plug. Can someone tell me which colored wires to use? I am assuming the black one is ground, but should I use the white or the brown/yellow wire for 12v? (I don't have a volt-meter to figure it out). Cheers.
