HSV maloo cluster swap

Hey guys, my mate has a 2008 HSV Maloo, 6.2L, manual etc.

He would like to know if you he can swap his cluster with another maloo one from the same year etc? He isn't sure if it will need programming or anything like that so wants to know if its a simple thing he can do at home.

Can't find info anywhere on the net! Thanks heaps everyone!

The IPC is linked to the VIN of the vehicle so yes it needs to be reprogrammed. The odometer cannot be changed however.

This has been raised a couple of times with changing a SS cluster with a HSV one. Apparently it worked up until about May 2008. After that, it all changed and the guys that bought HSV clusters couldnt get them to work. HSV also changed cluster manufacturer.

I am not sure if it is a straight swap with any Maloo because it is a HSV or if the same problem exists as I have said. Ringing HSV direct really would be best in this instance

I believe from May 2008 Holden changed Cluster manufacturer. Clusters were being made by Arrow and now they are made be VDO. From my understanding the Arrow ones all have a white back plate whereas the VDO version have a Black back plate. Currently I am looking into some indepth eeprom work on the VE clusters to be able to reprogram the clusters for different vehicles. Contact me if you would like more information.

I think as long as you get the cluster from the same manufacturer then a Tech 2 would be able to reset it to suit other than odometer. I can reset VIN's on the Arrow(White Backed) clusters but havent got a VDO one to verify yet.

There are a couple of problems at the moment with programming the VE Cluster EEPROMs directly using a 95160 EEPROM programmer.
First problem is getting a dump of ANY EEPROM from the Black (VDO Continental) Clusters.
These clusters do not show up too often on eBay, and when they do, they can be a bit expensive to buy...
Which means it is nigh impossible to get a dump of an EEPROM for one of these clusters, likewise without a dump of the EEPROM, it is impossible to say how difficult it is to swap clusters for these models that use the later cluster.

Second Problem is that when swapping from a single window LCD, to a Triple Window LCD, there is a memory location in the EEPROM that enables the extra LCD screens, and disables the Trip Computer functions displayed on the central LCD screen.
This memory location is mixed in (Part of a Byte), which is used to determine the drivetrain options for a vehicle, in the cluster.....

A couple of people are working on these problems, and publishing our knowledge as we go along.

I have successfully fitted an Omega Cluster, and a HSV Cluster to my Calais, (White Backs) and had the HSV Cluster working 100%. (Including the HSV Auto Trans Sports mode gear position display function)
The Omega cluster being a single LCD screen, when setting the vehicle options on the cluster for my Calais, the trip computer functions do not work. Everything else on the cluster works 100%

Unfortunately, the going is very slow due to not having EEPROM dumps for other models.

Oh, if you only want to swap one HSV Cluster with another, the easiest method is to swap the mainboard. (As long as they are the same type, back plastic cover colour)
A slightly harder method is to desolder the EEPROMs, and swap those over. (Again As long as they are the same type, back plastic cover colour)
This method will ensure the Odo and VIN number is swapped over.

If you wanted to have a go at programming the VE Cluster EEPROMs yourself, the EEPROM programmer and a clip are cheap as chips to buy on the net.
The programmer can be bought for around $50, and the 3M SOP8 Clip for another $30.
The back of the instrument cluster then needs to be removed, (4 screws), and the Clip is then clipped on the EEPROM, and plugged in to the programmer.
Finally, the Programmer is plugged in to a windows machine, via a USB cable.

Then you simply download the EEPROM data, save, and edit with a HEX editor.

Im keen to no if anyone can do this for my 07 VE SS. I Have a HSV cluster from a 2007 model aswell but just want it installed and programed. Can i install it and then drive it to holden for them to do? THanks

2007 models are easy. As I said in the above post, most of the information is available for these models.
(The Single / Triple LCD screen is only an issue at the moment because I only have one EEPROM dump from an Omega Cluster).
If I had an EEPROM dump from an SS Cluster, then things become a lot easier, as some, maybe all the vehicle options should be very similar to the V8 Calais EEPROM dump that I have. (I.E. 6L V8, possible 6 Speed Auto, etc).
I have the EEPROM locations that you need to change to get the HSV cluster to work.
These are public knowledge, and can be found if you search on google for VE Cluter EEPROM.

Now as for fitting the cluster and driving to Holden.
Yes, you can do this, there will be a couple of problems though one you install the HSV cluster without programming.
1) Traction Control and ABS will be permanently switched off while the HSV cluster is in the car.
2) The vehicle will log fault codes when the engine is started with the HSV cluster in the car. (So swapping the original cluster back in will still have the ABS and Traction control permanently switched off, until the system detects everything is back to normal)
3) No one can give me a straight answer on this, so I am not 100% certain, but the Odo Reading cannot be set by Holden/Tech2 once the HSV cluster has travelled more than 100Kms.

Using the EEPROM method, you can program the cluster outside of the car, so this prevents fault codes being logged.
You can also set the ODO reading by copying the relevant EEPROM locations from the SS cluster to the HSV cluster, so this is not a problem either.

If you can get me a dump of the SS Cluster EEPROM, then I am sure I can get the Triple LCD screen function working for you, and everyone else. (The more data we have to work with, the easier this stuff gets).
