Default LS2 VE SS piston slap?

    Hey guys,

I'm new to here but I had a VT SS and it rattles it's head off as all gen 3 5.7's of that era did. I bought a brand new SS VE series 2 2011 it had 4000km on it and Its piston slapping when cold? Not as bad as the VT but Im worried it will get worse? Anyone else have the issue? I would of thought chev/Holden would have sorted this by now... And I think its using oil!!? It was a bit low please help? As I said the piston slap isn't as bad as the gen 3 but it's there.

    Cheers Mitch

You sure its piston slap? Could be lifter sticking as often confused with piston slap. Is it there when cars warmed up? I have a lifter on my VXSS that makes a bit of noise
for a minute or so until it gets oiled up then its quiet. Should be under warranty anyway i think M8.

Yea I know the lifter noise it does that which is normal, taking it into hOlden on Wednesday when it's warm I get lifter noise but it has a faint but deep knock Knox Knox knock noise when dead cold my VT was woaful.. Im really disappointed.. The oil wasn't on full mark and it's done 4000km..

I dont think it would be piston slap mate also ur engine is a L77 not Ls2 as kanga said its probably them few seconds before the oil reaches the lifters then it should go away, mine does the same

The lifter noise is more of a tack tack tack noise I guess you could say, buts defiantly not as bad as a spun bearing sound or anything Like that.

    Mitch,

Have a listen to the videos in this thread. I think this is what you have. It's been diagnosed as valvetrain noise (and not piston slap) The Gen3's had alot of issues with gudgen pin noise.

AFM L76 lifter rattle when cold WTF?

I am on my 3rd engine replacement due to this noise. The service dept will tell you they all do it and its normal. Not all do it and no it should not be a normal thing.

and Mitch yeah theres a bit of a difference between em, I believe that the ve 6L's have better flowing heads and manifold then the LS2 but dont hold me too that lol

The VE series two commodore L77 AFM V8 looks to have some real engine problems with lifter noise and engine knock on cold start up.
My car has had the new lifters fitted and now knocks on cold start up. The noise in question is noticeable about 20-30 seconds after cold start up when the engine idles down and continues for up to one minute or more until the oil pressure/heat is up. The knock is very slight to start with, then becomes louder then goes completely. This noise is completely different to a lifter clack, it’s a deeper knock sound. Different oils make no difference so don’t waste your money.

Still the L98 I believe. Carpoint has it listed as an L98 at least.

I thought the L98 finished when AFM was introduced - should now be L76/77 (manual/auto or other way - can't remember)

L77 is for the series 2 auto and man, L98 was for the manuals and L76 was for the autos with afm in the series 1

Well it's at Holden today, I'll let you know what happens, it's a jOke that they still haven't got this problem under control. Sounds exactly the same as my shit box gen 3 just not as bad. By the way it's a manual not an auto and it definitely not lifter noise thanks guys for your input.

They couldn't hear the noise, apparently Holden allow for oil usage within the first 10,000 km but not excessive, just whilst things are bedding in. I'm doing an oil consumption test and were going from there, they say they couldn't hear the knock but it's not as bad as the gen 3's bottom line these all alloy V8's from chev are rubbish when it comes to build quality, they go well and all that but you would think they king of the V8 would have there little problems dealt with by now. Piston slap, cold rattle like noises, oil consumption etc...

Ive been reading about these cold rattle's ect alot of ppls problems were the lifters being AFM ones in the L67 and L77, seems a pretty common problem, cant say my L98 does it tho
